All the preliminaries are cleared for the Cazenovia girls cross country team as it is set to battle Skaneateles for OHSL Liberty division supremacy.
The Lakers’ final hurdle before Skaneateles took place Wednesday afternoon, where it rolled past Altmar-Parish Williamstown 17-47 by recording a top-three sweep and continuing to coast from there.
Jeanette Cudney led the Lakers’ pack, winning in 20 minutes, 50 seconds, just ahead of Megan Stanford, who was second in 20:53, while Mya Walters (21:30) held off APW’s Chelsea Cooper (21:40) for fourth place.
Hayley Frost finished fifth, in 22:05, just as Malone Gabor, in sixth place (22:15) closed out the Lakers’ scoring column. Kaitlin Rossiter had an eighth-place time of 22:25 as Mimi Gabor finished ninth in 22:35 and Adrien Owens (23:06) was 10th.
In the boys meet against APW, the competition proved much closer. But Cazenovia, getting key contributions from its fourth through sixth runners, edged past the Rebels 28-29.
Kevin Ridings won the individual race in a time of 18:25, well clear of APW’s Zach Mosher (18:42) in second place, while Sean Satchwell made his way to fourth place in 19:40 behind the Rebels’ Sage Bartlett (18:58) in third.
Drew Devendorf finished sixth, in 19:58, but the real key was how, after APW’s Brandon Sebelowitz finished seventh in 20 minutes flat, the Lakers swept the rest of the top 10.
Connor Carroll claimed eighth place, in a clocking of 20:23. Cody Dennis finished ninth, in 20:27, while Matt Mistur made his way to 10th place in 20:37 and clinched the team honors.
Over in the OHSL Freedom division, the Chittenango girls team split a three-way meet with Mexico and Jamesville-DeWitt, beating the Tigers 15-49, but falling to the Red Rams 20-43.
Anna Galbraith ran a sensational race, her time of 19:51 more than two minutes clear of the field. But J-D, led by Samantha Jaffe (21:38) and Laura Wengert (22:01), gobbled up the next eight spots in the order, and no other Bears runner got into the top 10.
Chittenango’s boys lost narrow decisions to Mexico (28-30) and Jamesville-DeWitt (26-30) in that same three-way meet, as six Red Rams and Tigers runners crossed the line before the Bears’ Robbie Howard took seventh place in 18:01. Mike Capeling was eighth, in 18:18, while Isaac Czarnecki gained ninth place (18:31) and Kenny Galbraith was 10th in 18:33.
