Just as one local high school boys golf power suffered a rare blemish, another one was gaining some sweet payback.
Fayetteville-Manlius, who had lost a tight 190-192 home match to CNY Counties League leader Baldwinsville on Sept. 20 at Woodcrest, went to Timber Banks just four days later and, this time, got the victory, knocking off the Bees 207-212.
Dan Thomas led F-M’s well-balanced effort, shooting a 39 for nine holes, one behind B’ville’s top player, Matt Monaco, who had a 38.
Yet other than Monaco and Christian Nizamis, who had a 41, no Bees golfer shot better than 44. But four F-M golfers did, as Mike Lee gave support to Thomas, posting a 40, with Ryan Keller getting a 41 and Jack Santoro adding a 42. Jimmy Barnes contributed a 45.
Christian Brothers Academy entered the last full week of the 2013 regular season with a 63-match league win streak. Since 2010, its only blemishes were out of league play, to Jamesville-DeWitt in 2010 and to Fayetteville-Manlius earlier this season.
Yet after beating Tully 194-223 at Drumlins last Monday, the Brothers’ streak would end a day later at Rogues Roost, where Chittenango defeated CBA by a score of 208-212.
Even with ideal scoring conditions – sunshine, cool temperatures, a modest breeze – the best CBA could manage was a 40 from Jack Bellardini. His teammates were close behind as Drew Derrenbacker and William Ierlan both shot 42, with Steve Fournier and Sam Little both posting 44.
Where Chittenango won it was having the lone sub-40 round, a 39 from Kyle McGinnis, plus steady rounds from Erik Russell (41), Ryan Delaney (42), Kyle Christopher and Mike McIntosh (43 each).
Tully, with its 6-2 record, appeared to offer a serious challenge for CBA in last Monday’s match at Drumlins, but the Brothers, led again by Derrenbacker and Bellardini.
Derrenbacker matched par with his 36, while Bellardini put up a 38. Fournier, Ierlan and Webb Little each posted rounds of 40 and Sam Little added a 45. Jon Lippert led Tully with a 37, but no other Black Knights player broke 40.
