Coming off a tough five-set victory over LaFayette on Sept. 13, the Cazenovia girls volleyball team found things a bit easier in the week that followed, winning twice against Onondaga High School League foes to improve its overall record to 6-1.
The Lakers paid a visit to Fulton last Tuesday night, finding no trouble against the Red Raiders as it recorded a 25-19, 25-11, 25-19 sweep.
Dominique Lyons led the way, picking up 13 assists, five digs, three kills and two aces. Madison Gabor gained four kills and three digs, while Willa Mihayli-Koch contributed three kills, two aces and two digs. Dana Kiselica had six digs as Taylor Eldred and Amara Kattrein each finished with two kills.
On Friday night, Cazenovia was back home at Buckley Gym, facing a Jamesville-DeWitt side that had taken Westhill to five sets the night before, and when the Lakers crushed the Red Rams 25-10 in the opening set, it looked like it would be a short night.
That realization vanished as soon as J-D won the second set 25-21. Properly chastised, the Lakers gradually took charge again, winning the third set 25-19 and the fourth set 25-14 to close things out.
Up front, Gabor and Mihayli-Koch both gained nine kills, with Gabor adding four aces and a team-best 12 digs as Mihayli-Koch got four blocks, four digs and two aces.
Kiselica added seven digs, while Kattrein picked up five kills and five digs. Lyons contributed everywhere, earning 27 assists, but also getting four digs, three aces and two kills. Danielle Tedesco had three kills and three blocks.
Cazenovia’s next home match is even bigger – a showdown with first-place Westhill next Wednesday night, this after a Monday trip to Phoenix.
