Each season, the Baldwinsville girls tennis team takes its ultimate measure when it plays Fayetteville-Manlius, a side that has not lost to any local opponent in nearly two decades.
And the Bees though that, this time around, it had the capability of ending that historic streak – but the Hornets thought otherwise, toppling B’ville 5-2 in Friday’s showdown.
It didn’t take long for the Bees’ top singles player, Kahlei Reisinger, to put her team on the board in a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over first singles foe Shirley Zhang. However, gaining any other point would prove to be a struggle.
In third doubles, Lauren Dusse and Taylor Slink lost the first set to Shannon Fullam and Abby Welker, but roared back to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. Maddie Quilter and Adriana Speach, also going to three sets, lost to Laurin Goldberg and Alexandra Millimaci 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.
Back up in singles play, Katherine Schumacher pushed F-M’s Kristina Liu to a third set, but still took a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 loss. Taylor Ferrari fell to Maggie Bonono 6-2, 6-2.
Natalie Kot played first doubles with Hannah Mautz, but they lost to Madison Jordan and Sienna Susko 6-3, 6-1. Amanda Coogan and Gabby Fiello also lost in two sets to Katerina Atallah and Mikayla Cleary-Hammarstedt 6-1, 6-4.
A week before it took its shot at F-M, the Bees opened play with an impressive effort against West Genesee, putting together a 7-0 shutout of the Wildcats on Aug. 30.
Kot and Mautz gained a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Taylor Ginestro and Kayla Llanos, while Quilter and Adriana Speach rolled past Morgan Nichols and Melissa Schiff 6-1, 6-2.
Slink, paired this time with Jennifer Stone, won in straight sets, with Fiello and Amanda Coogan working past Elena Kopp and Shannon Marlatt 6-0, 7-5.
Up in singles, it was another B’ville sweep against the Wildcats. Reisinger handled Samantha Heyn 6-0, 6-2, while Ferrari had a 7-5, 6-0 win over Marisa Joyce. Schumacher routed Kelsey Shanahan by scores of 6-0 and 6-1.
