Another season for the Baldwinsville girls volleyball team is underway, as is another quest to run through Section III Class AA foes unscathed and go after a state championship.
The Bees’ quest to win it all in 2012 did not get derailed until the finals at Glens Falls Civic Center, where Rochester Mercy prevailed in four sets.
Many new faces are on hand for B’ville, but the same standard of perfection allies for head coach Mary Jo Cerqua, who saw her Bees open last Tuesday night with a three-set sweep over Oswego.
A 25-14 decision in the opening set started B’ville along, and while the Buccaneers played a bit closer in the next two sets, the Bees still prevailed 25-17 and 25-20.
Meghann Smith anchored the back line, providing 15 assists to a wide variety of front-line players. Nine of them recorded kills, led by Sarah Herman, who served up six aces to go with her five kills.
Rachel Aiello added four kills, four assists and two aces as Rebecca Lawrence and Shayna Webber got three kills apiece. Webber added three blocks as Caryn Salce recorded three digs.
When the Bees visited Cicero-North Syracuse two nights later, again it took just three sets for the work to get accomplished as B’ville swept the Northstars 25-22, 25-16, 25-14.
Even though the first set was a bit stressful, the Bees improved as the match went on. Smith improved her total to 19 assists as, again, a deep front line worked in front of her.
Aiello finished with six kills and five assists, while Melissa Voyer picked up five kills. Webber had three kills and two blocks as Amanda May and Riley Carucci each had three-kill outings. Meghan Andre starred on the defensive end with seven digs.
Following a tournament appearance at Burnt Hills on Saturday, the Bees are on the road this week for matches at Fayetteville-Manlius and West Genesee.
