Cazenovia native Lisa Kendrick always wanted to do her own thing. After living and working 16 years in New York City as a graphic designer, she returned to Cazenovia a little more than one month ago to open her own business. The day after she arrived in her old hometown, Kendrick opened the door to her new endeavor — Foxgloves Flower Shop.
Foxgloves, located at 53 Albany St., is a full-service flower shop that also creates and sells home decorations and Cazenovia-related creations; Kendrick also offers floral work for bridal showers, weddings and other events.
The creative idea behind Kendrick and her shop is to take classic, Old World ideas and designs and incorporate them into modern creations.
“I call it Old World style reimagined in the 21st century,” Kendrick said. “I love Old World things: things made by hand or emulated made by hand, turn of the 19th century, romantic era — things from a time before computers.”
Walking into Foxgloves, which opened July 1, one sees this old/new reimagined style in the classic Grecian urns and gilded vases filled with contemporary flowers, the hand-made wreaths that appear antique yet modernly stylish simultaneously, the unique arrangement of one poppy pod and one shellacked curly vine standing tall in a contemporary glass vase.
“The primary focus of this shop is a flower shop, but I also like to offer gifts that are different from the other shops,” Kendrick said. “I also believe that customer service is key. People are sick of ordering on phones, through agencies or on computer sites that offer no choices. I want to talk to people. I’ll make personal arrangements just for you or tell me what you want and I’ll order it.”
Foxgloves offers fresh flowers — many of which are different than run-of-the-mill choices such as green mini hydrangea, allium, protea, strawflowers and green Fuji mums — prearranged, arranged to order or by-the-stem with delivery locally or around the country; silk flower arrangements premade or to order; as well as dried flowers and handmade, seasonal wreaths.
There are home décor offerings such as wall hangings, picture frames, 19th century-style mirrors, antique-style postcards and some “shabby chic” items. Foxgloves also sells handmade cards by local artist Kimberly Cooper and by Kendrick.
Kendrick also wants to offer items that emphasize “branding” Cazenovia, such as cloth tote bags that say “Cazenovia” and have flowers drawn or stamped on them, and eventually potential items such as gift baskets or locally-made soaps.
“I’m here to promote Caz — Cazenovia has its own vintage,” she said. “I love what we’re becoming, there’s great stuff in town that’s different. I’m so excited to be here.”
While Foxgloves has been open for more than one month, Kendrick is still putting the finishing touches to it —including waiting for her permanent store sign — and, since she will offer seasonal flowers and arrangements, is already thinking ahead to Autumn styles and offerings.
Foxgloves is open 9:30 a.m.to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday and Monday by appointment only.
