Even with the close call it gave to Cicero-North Syracuse on May 1, the Baldwinsville softball team remained, to some degree, a group still in search of some consistency.
Exactly a week after that thriller with the Northstars, the Bees hosted West Genesee and could not get its bats going in a 6-1 defeat to the Wildcats.
For much of the afternoon, WG pitcher Morgan Nichols clamped down on B’ville, who managed just three hits, one of them a double by Elizabeth Johns. The Bees did not get on the board until the bottom of the seventh, when Danielle Sayler singled and later came home.
By then, WG had a comfortable margin, getting single runs in the second and fourth inning off Keanna Wolcik and then tagging Liz Campbell for four runs in the top of the seventh to get away. Nichols and Tess Andrews led the Wildcats, each with two hits and two RBIs.
In a non-league game Friday at state Class A no. 11-ranked Oneida, the Bees led late in regulation, only to see the Indians rally and force extra frames before prevailing, 6-5, in a 10-inning classic.
Trailing 1-0, B’ville tagged Oneida pitcher Ashley Marshall for four runs in the top of the fourth as Wolcik’s two-run single keyed the rally. Campbell pitched, and though she gave up a run in the fourth, she had the Bees up, 4-2, before Oneida tied with a pair of sixth-inning tallies.
Then it went to extra innings, where Campbell and Marshall kept it 4-4 in the eighth and ninth. International rules put a runner on second base to start the 10th inning. B’ville used that to get a run in the top of the 10th on Isabella May’s single to grab a 5-4 lead.
But in the bottom of the 10th, the Indians’ Morgan Sgarlata singled, putting runners on second and third. Campbell’s wild pitch scored Emily LaSalle with the tying run, and Lauren O’Neil’s single scored Sgarlata to end it.
