Genesee baseball team continued to establish itself as a Class AA title contender through a busy stretch of four games in six days where it would win three times.

The Wildcats displayed plenty of virtues in last Monday’s 7-1 win over Fayetteville-Manlius, among them patience and well-timed surprise.

For most of the afternoon, Adam Reichel dueled with Hornets right-hander Mike Hoalcraft, both of them stranding runners to thwart scoring chances, though WG took a 1-0 lead in the third on singles by Colin Bevard and Will Randall and an RBI groundout from Reichel.

But Hoalcraft settled down and retired eight in a row, getting rewarded a bit when F-M tied it, 1-1, in the top of the sixth, but all that did was set up the Wildcats’ breakthrough in the bottom of that frame.

Will Randall led off with a single and Reichel was hit, putting runners on first and second. Then Jon Brittain squared to bunt, but then poked a single between third base and short, allowing Randall to race home with the go-ahead run.

With runners on second and third, Bailey Gauthier executed a perfect bunt single to score Reichel and make it 3-1. Nick DeJohn followed with a two-run, pinch-hit double, and WG tacked on two more runs against reliever Josh Loeffler. Reichel then got the last three outs, striking out six in his complete-game effort while holding F-M to six hits.

WG continued this streak Thursday night, at DeLutis Field, where it faced Rome Free Academy and put together a 9-2 victory over the Black Knights.

A two-run first inning got the Wildcats moving, and it kept RFA in check thanks to the pitching of Evan Reichel, who went six innings and allowed just five hits.

Still, WG didn’t seal it until a five-run outburst in the top of the seventh, similar to what it had done late against F-M. Bailey Gauthier had two hits and three RBIs, while Bevard and Wes Randall each drove in two runs and Miguel Rodriguez added an RBI. Brittain doubled twice and Steve Payette also got two hits.

The Wildcats’ hot streak got halted Friday afternoon, when it went to Falcon Park and, aside from one big rally, saw its bats shut down in a 5-3 loss to Auburn.

For four innings, WG could not break through against Maroons pitcher Mike Charles, but it erased a 3-0 deficit in the top of the fifth with three runs to tie it, 3-3. Gauthier and Will Randall both drove in runs during that rally.

Charles shut the door from there, only allowing four hits overall, and the Maroons got to Wildcat starter Seamus Barry for a go-ahead run in the fifth and earned an insurance run off Dan Macko in the sixth to prevail.

WG brought back Adam Reichel for Saturday’s game at Liverpool, who had only won its first game of the season the day before against Syracuse West in a 3-0 shutout.

And Reichel would win again, though he would need to be patient as, again, WG waited until the latter stages to pull it out, this time doing in the eighth inning to beat the Warriors 9-1.

Much of the contest was a duel between Reichel and Liverpool’s Don Pauldine. Michael Wright drove in a run in the bottom of the third and the Warriors went up, 1-0, and though Reichel shut things down from there, only giving up three hits and striking out five, WG couldn’t capitalize.

So the Wildcats (6-3) went to the top of the seventh still trailing, 1-0, but got to Nathan Dodge for the tying run, sending it to extra innings. Then, in the eighth, the Wildcats exploded for eight runs, tagging Dodge, Luke Gilbert and Ben Terzini to turn a tense contest into a rout.

To help his own cause, Reichel managed two RBIs in that late surge, matching Bevard and Will Randall, while Wes Randall managed three hits and an RBI and Rodriguez also drove in a run.

This week features four more games, including three straight at home against Syracuse East, Auburn and Oswego after a Monday rematch at F-M.
