Fayetteville-Manlius cast aside all the bad weather and immediately took command in the CNY Counties League American division, sweeping through both of its opening meets.
It all started when F-M routed Auburn in both sides of last Wednesday’s league openers. The boys Hornets beat the Maroons 120-16, while the girls Hornets handled things in a 105-27 victory.
For his spring debut, Nick Ryan ran the mile in 4:19, took just 1:58 to cover the 800-meter run and won the 3,200-meter run in 9:19. He also teamed with Bryce Millar, Connor Farrell and Andrew Berger to run the 4×800 in 8:33.1.
Kyle Barber was first in the 110 hurdles (16.4), claimed the triple jump (41 feet 8 inches) and also won the 400 hurdles in 1:02.0, going to the 4×400 relay to help Charlie Beeler, Ed Cheatham and Austin Perez (back from the knee injury that sidelined him during football season) win the 4×400 relay in 4:00.5.
Beeler (400-meter dash, 51.6 seconds), Zaire Ashley (100-meter dash, 11.2 seconds) and Jake Wittig (200-meter dash, 23.5 seconds) swept the sprints, with Ashley and Wittig joining Ryan Greer and Nick Polosky as F-M won the 4×100 in 47.9 seconds. Parker Noble was first in the long jump (18’1”) as T.J. Wheatley cleared 5’8” in the high jump.
F-M’s girls saw Jessica Puro win both the shot put (28’8 ½”) and discus (75’), with Anna Castro taking the high jump (4’10”) and long jump (14’3 ¾”). Carolina Colon added a victory in the triple jump, going 28’11”.
On the track, Caitin Ferro won twice, taking the 100 hurdles (17.9 seconds) and 400 hurdles (1:16.7). Hannah Smith claimed the 1,500 in 4:55 flat, in between wins by Olivia Ryan in the 400 sprint (1:02.2) and Jessica Howe in the 800 (2:27.1) and Katie Brislin’s time of 10:14.4 in the 3,000.
Sarah Olick-Sutphen needed 27.7 seconds for first place in the 200 sprint. F-M swept the 4×100 (53.6 seconds), 4×400 (4:27) and 4×800 (9:50) relays as Olick-Sutphen, Howe, Ferro, Ryan, Christine Lavoie, Anna Perrotti, Natalie Zazzara, Katie Brislin and Jillian Fanning took part.
In Saturday’s meet against Central Square, rescheduled from an April 10 weather postponement, the Hornets dominated again, winning the girls meet 123-18 and stopping the Red Hawks 99.5-41.5 on the boys side.
Brislin, Ferro and Castro earned two wins apiece in the girls meet In the 3,000, Brislin ran to a time of 10:25, this after needing 5:06 to prevail in the 1,500 and teaming with Fanning, Smith and Howe for a time of 9:55 in the 4×800.
Ferro ran the 100 hurdles in 18.1 seconds, but improved to 1:14.6 in the 400 hurdles. Castro, after going 14’5 ¾” in the long jump, again reached 4’10” on her way to a long jump victory. Christabel Ezidiegwu won the triple jump (32’10”) and Savannah Pidkaminy had a top discus throw of 85’7”.
Zazzara ran the 100 in 13.4 seconds, with Perrotti first in the 200 sprint (28.3 seconds) and Ryan going 1:01.3 in the 400 sprint. Julie Barger won the 800 in 2:22 as Ryan, Zazzara, Lavoie and Smith beat the field in the 4×400 (4:20) and Perrotti, joining Lavoie, Olick-Sutphen and Zazzara, went through the 4×100 in 52.2 seconds.
Though the boys meet was closer, F-M still saw Ryan pull off another triple, going under two minutes (1:59.6, to be exact) in the 800, improving to 4:16.8 in the mile and doing the same in the 3,200, winning in 9:17.6.
Barber needed 17 seconds to win the 110 hurdles and exactly a minute to prevail in the 400 hurdles, while the sprint trio struck again, Ashley taking the 100 (11.9 seconds), Wittig the 200 (24.3 seconds) and Beeler the 400 in 51.6 seconds.
Kyle Harbour prevented a Central Square sweep in field events, winning the high jump with a clearance of 5’6”. The Hornets’ sweep of the 4×100 (46.6 seconds), 4×400 (3:41.4) and 4×800 (8:30) relays included Ryan, Beeler, Ashley, Wittig, Millar, Farrell, Greer, Beeler, Parker Noble, Kyle Barber and Ed Cheatham.
