Earning its first win of the season, the Skaneateles softball team held off a late charge from Chittenango last Monday afternoon and got past the Bears 5-4.
A week after its league opener (an April 8 defeat to Cazenovia), the Lakers traded runs with Chittenango early, as it was 2-2 after one inning, before going in front by scoring twice in the fourth inning and once in the sixth.
Ali Tomlinson, with three hits, paced the Skaneateles attack, also earning an RBI. Erica Nye scored two runs as Tomlinson, Sidney Lawson and Molly Kerstetter each scored one run.
Also drawing the pitching assignment, Tomlinson took a 5-2 lead to the bottom of the seventh, where Chittenango would produce a scare by getting two runs before the Lakers managed to get the final out. Overall, Tomlinson gave up five hits and three walks, striking out seven.
Two days later, the Lakers lost 8-2 to Jordan-Elbridge, getting both of its runs in the first inning, but then tailing off as it got just five total hits against Eagles pitcher Alexis Rouse, who struck out 14. A four-run third inning would put J-E in front for good.
It got worse on Thursday, when Skaneateles lost 24-3 to Marcellus. The Mustangs broke open a 2-1 game with an 11-run third inning, eventually picking up 21 hits against Tomlinson as Molly MacLachlan, with four hits and six RBIs, led the charge.
All of this week, the Lakers would get on the bus and travel to games, visiting Westhill, Hannibal and Bishop Ludden Monday through Wednesday before going to Phoenix Friday and McGraw on Saturday afternoon.
