With all kinds of youth on its roster, the Baldwinsville girls basketball team has found the 2012-13 season to be a vast learning experience, and sometimes the lessons are harsh.
The Bees ventured to Oswego last Tuesday night, and once more its offense disappeared for long stages of the first half, a chief reason why it lost to the Buccaneers 53-36.
B’ville did defend well in the first quarter, holding Oswego to six points. But it only got a single field goal of its own, and when the Bucs broke through in the second period and outscored the Bees 15-7, the visitors could not recover.
Hope DeFazio got most of her 13 points in the second half, while Maureen Thayer managed seven points and Gabi Jordan added six points. Oswego fended off all of the Bees’ late charges as Marguerite Dillon (14 points), Erica Atkins (10 points) and McKenna Brooks (nine points) led the way.
B’ville actually put up more points in Thursday night’s home game against West Genesee, but that still could not prevent a 50-42 defeat to the playoff-bound Wildcats.
During the second quarter, though, a major upset appeared possible. B’ville, trailing 12-5, turned up its game on both ends, outscoring WG 16-7 the rest of the half to get a 21-19 edge at the break.
Just as quickly, though, the Bees cooled off and the Wildcats reclaimed the lead in the third quarter, holding on as Melissa Fumano, with 16 points, led the way.
DeFazio, with 21 points, accounted for exactly half of B’ville’s production, as Emily Pascale added seven points. The Bees’ season finishes Tuesday at Auburn.
