With its depth and versatility, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys indoor track and field team roared past Liverpool and the rest of the field to win the CNY Counties League National division championship Wednesday night at SRC Arena.
The Northstars picked up 162.5 points, well clear of Baldwinsville (102 points) in the runner-up spot. Liverpool was third with 90.5 points.
Mark Broughton and Shawn Webb went 1-2 for C-NS in the 55-meter dash, Broughton winning in 6.80 seconds and Webb (6.96) right behind. It was the same in the 300-meter dash, where Broughton edged Webb, 37.62 seconds to 37.91, for the top spot.
To complete their sprint sweep, Broughton and Webb joined Avery Yarn and Nathan Hilt as C-NS beat the field in the 4×200 relay in 1:34 flat. Liverpool’s quartet of Mark Vanmarter, Collin Gwilt, Zach Sanborn and James Williams were third in 1:42.21.
C-NS was dominant in field events, too. Yarn went 19 feet 1 3/4 inches in the long jump, holding off Liverpool’d Mark Vanmarter (18’10 3/4″), as Bryson Mayes (18’9 3/4″) gained third place.
It was Mayes’ turn in the triple jump, though, as he went 41’2 1/2″ to beat Morgan Austen, who was second with 40’2 1/4″. Jeffrey Myers was sixth for the Warriors. Austen would strike in the 55-meter hurdles, prevailing in 8.09 seconds as Liverpool’s Gaurab Bhattacharya (8.44 seconds) got the runner-up spot.
In the 3,200-meter run, the Warriors’ Connor Buck was second, in 9:55.27, with Dylan McCarthy third in 10:17.17 as Neil Gill and Colin Greenseich were fourth and fifth, respectively, for C-NS.
C-NS saw the quartet of Nathan Hilt, Nick Erwin, Abraham Abraham and Evan Russell get to second place in the 4×400 relay in 3:46.04, as Liverpool (3:55.45) took fourth place.
Anthony Lupia took third place in the mile in 4:44.40, ahead of Nick LeClair (4:45.69) in fourth and Buck in fifth place. Lupia, Gill, Paul DeGennaro and Matt Crough were second in the 4×800 relay in 8:38.25, where Liverpool was fourth.
The Warriors did get one win on the oval as Alex Christensen claimed the 1,000-meter run, his time of 2:39.43 topping West Genesee’s Nate Conroy by 2.07 seconds as Lupia (2:44.75) was third and Bryan Sibble was fifth. Yarn was third in the 600-meter run, edging Liverpool’s Landon Verney, 1:31.95 to Verney’s 1:31.99.
In the shot put, Geoffrey Bell gave Liverpool a victory as he threw it 45’6 1/2″, leaving C-NS’s Joe Castaldo (45’1″) in second place as the Warriors’ Anthony Miller (41’4″) was fourth.
The Warriors’ Zach Harris won the high jump when he cleared 5’6″ with fewer misses than Austen, who settled for second place as Dan Gulino (C-NS) and Nate Gurante (Liverpool) tied for fifth. Tate LaPorte cleared 10’6″ to give the Northstars second place in the pole vault, with teammate Connor Osborne in fourth place.
They all return to SRC Arena next Wednesday for the Section III Class AA championship meet, where C-NS will try and topple defending champion Fayetteville-Manlius.
