A Cazenovia man remains in critical condition in Upstate Medical Center after being struck by a pickup truck while he was skateboarding in the village of Morrisville on Monday, Jan. 14.
According to state police, Edward J. Wasilewski, age 30, of Cazenovia, was skateboarding on the south shoulder of Route 20 near Reservoir Road in Morrisville when James Hotaling, of Morrisville, stopped his 1993 Chevrolet pickup at the intersection of Reservoir Road and Route 20 while waiting for eastbound traffic to pass before turning south onto Reservoir Road. Upon turning, Hotaling failed to see Wasilewski, who was wearing dark clothing, who struck the passenger side of the pickup and was ejected.
Wasilewski was treated at the scene by Morrisville Fire Department Rescue and transported by Somac Ambulance to the village of Cazenovia, where he was transferred to Onondaga County Air One helicopter at its “hot landing zone” in the field at Gypsy Bay on Route 20 and taken to Upstate Hospital.
As of press time, Wasilewski still was listed in critical condition. A passenger in the vehicle was transported to Community Memorial Hospital for minor injuries. The vehicle driver was uninjured.
No tickets have been issued at this time and the investigation is continuing.
State police also are investigating a fatal snowmobile accident in the town of Deruyter on Sunday, Jan. 13.
According to state police, Andrew J. Guelfi, 27, of Syracuse, was riding a snowmobile on trails approximately one mile south of Williams Road in the town of Deruyter when his sled entered a wooded area and struck a tree. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Madison County coroner ordered Guelfi’s body removed to the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office. Cause of death is pending autopsy.
The New Woodstock Fire Department assisted in the investigation. The investigation into the accident is continuing.
