A promising outlook at the start of 2013 clouded up for the Baldwinsville boys basketball team, as did its post-season chances.
The Bees went to Corcoran Friday night, and once more its defense proved ineffective, a key reason why it lost to the Cougars 84-66.
Where it all went wrong was in the second quarter. B’ville took a 17-16 lead into that frame, but Corcoran dominated the rest of the half, outscoring the Bees 21-8 and taking the lead for good.
A fast-paced second half saw Tim Marshall work his total to 20 points, while Jayson Brower added 12 points. Kevin Drain struggled, though, managing just one field goal, and the likes of Ben Diorio, Mike Aiello, Zach Leo and Anthony DeMarco (seven points apiece) could not make up for it.
Above anything else, though, was the work of Corcoran’s Torrence Commodore, who made baskets, drew contact, and didn’t stop until he set a career mark with 35 points, including 13 field goals and nine successful free throws.
Now with a 4-8 mark, the Bees return home for crucial back-to-back games on Wednesday against Nottingham and next Friday against Central Square. At least a split is needed for B’ville to remain in reasonable playoff consideration.
