Already a key part of back-to-back Section III champions on the soccer field, Liverpool sophomore Ore Akinpelu made her way back to the girls indoor track Warriors – just in time to give her side an ideal parting gift for 2012.

Led by Akinpelu, Liverpool claimed Friday’s Oscar B. Jensen Holiday Relays at SRC Arena, picking up 54 points, just enough to fend off Fayetteville-Manlius (50 points) for the top spot as Cicero-North Syracuse, with 32.5 points, finished fifth.

Using a format similar to the Jack Morse Relays in mid-December, two athletes from each team put up combined times, distances and heights, but unlike the Morse meet, no relay race (like the 4×200 or 4×400) was contested.

In the 300-meter dash, Akinpelu roared to the individual title in 42.25 seconds, more than a second ahead of Emma Ford (Skaneateles) as Akinpelu and Yasmeen Griffin took the team event in 1:28.97, with Homer (1:32.21) in the runner-up spot.

It was just the same in the 400-meter dash, where Akinpelu held off West Genesee star Laura Leff, 1:01.42 to 1:01.70, for a second individual title, and with Catherine Rowell (fifth) claimed the team event in 2:04.65, good for another 10 points.

The Warriors also got second place in the mile relay, Morgan Mahoney and Juliana Basla getting total times of 11:01.22 as Jacqlynn Halstead, second overall in 5:18.19, and Victoria Pirro had C-NS third in 11:34.14. Mahoney and Basla went on to take third (22:31.55) in the 3,000-meter run, where the Northstars’ Nicole Watterud and Emily Dolan were fourth in 23:08.59.

Angela Kulpa, second among individuals in the pole vault by clearing 9 feet 6 inches, managed third-place points. Jazmine Herbert and Alexus Gersbacher claimed fourth place in the 55-meter dash in a combined 15.69 seconds. Nelilah Watkins and Shania Williams were fourth in the shot put, heaving it 56′ 5 3/4″ between them.

Where C-NS did prevail was in the 55-meter hurdles, where Hannah Szumloz and Jade Jenkins were third and sixth, respectively, and 19.30 seconds was enough to keep West Genesee (19.93 seconds) and the rest of the field away.

And in the triple jump, the Northstars won as Jenkins returned, finishing second overall (33′ 3 1/2″) and, with Marissa Colburn, got the top score of 63′ 1 1/2″, where Rowell and Allison Oltier were third (60′ 2 1/2″) for Liverpool. C-NS also was sixth in the 1,000-meter run and seventh in the 55 sprint.

Moving to the boys portion of the Jensen Relays, C-NS moved up to third place and picked up 45 points, beating Liverpool (29 points), but behind Baldiwnsville (62 points) and F-M (54 points) in the top two positions.

Morgan Austen, by himself, gained many of those C-NS points. He was third in the individual triple jump, but teamed with Bryson Mayes (fifth) for a team victory in 77’8 1/2″, nearly two feet better than second-place Mexico.

Also, Austen was second in the 55 hurdles and, teamed with Ed Mahana for second in the team event (18.24 seconds) as F-M won in 17.87 seconds. Mark Broughton and Shawn Webb were close in the 55 sprint, getting to 13.70 seconds, but Nottingham (13.57) kept the Northstars in second place.

The Warriors’ Ryheim Lawes won the individual 300 sprint in 36.84 seconds, and with Mark VanMarter got second among teams in 1:16.86, as only B’ville (1:14.76) fared better. C-NS’s Shawn Webb and Nathan Hilt were third in 1:17.75, with Broughton and Avery Yarn combining for third (1:49.69) in the 400 sprint.

Also for C-NS, Bryan Sibble (third overall) and Paul DeGennaro got fourth in the 1,000-meter run in 5:40.05, where Liverpool was sixth. Anthony Lupia and Matt Crough were fifth in the mile relay in 9:36.52, where Liverpool took seventh and just missed out on points.

The Warriors’ lone win came in the shot put, where Geoffrey Bell had the best individual throw of 44’11” and teamed with Anthony Miller for a top distance of 85′ 2 1/2″, just a quarter-inch ahead of Corcoran.

Travis Chewning-Kulick got second among individuals in the pole vault, clearing 11’9 as Zach Liebmann (Jamesville-DeWitt) won with 12’6″, but that was good for fourth-place team points.

Connor Buck and Jake Rowell had Liverpool in third place in the 3,200-meter run in 21:07.08, with C-NS’s Colin Greenseich and Chris Hannan fifth.
