Christian Brothers Academy girls swimming star Summer Schmitt nearly emerged with two titles from last weekend’s state championship meet at Ithaca College.
The closest call came in the 100-yard butterfly. Schmitt posted the fastest qualifying time of 55.92 seconds, nearly half a second better than Jericho’s Trudiann Patrick (56.40 seconds) during that session.
But the state championship race turned out different. Schmitt’s time tipped to 56.27 seconds, enough to allow Patrick, in 56.15 seconds, to edge her for the crown, though would earn All-American consideration.
Schmitt also contended in the 100 backstroke. Her qualifying time of 56.55 seconds was inches behind Bellmore-Merrick’s Gabbie Toback (56.51 seconds), and in the final race Schmitt had 56.82 seconds, again earning All-American consideration while taking third place. Monroe-Woodbury’s Morgan Fairclough won in 55.94 seconds, with Toback (56.19 seconds) the runner-up.
Another CBA swimmer, Kathryn Coughlin, moved her way to fourth place, and All-American consideration, in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:04.99 as Olivia Chan (Sewanhaka) won in 1:02.83.
Coughlin, Schmitt, Maggie Fletcher and Julia Torell qualified second in the 200 medley relay in 1:49.20, just behind Clarence (1:49.10), only to fall to third place in the finals, even though the time improved to 1:48.85. Clarence won in 1:47.20.
In that same race, Jamesville-DeWitt’s quartet of Sophia Farchione, Kalie Coyne, Alden Coyne and Molly Hair finished 12th, in 1:52.65. Kalie Coyne went on to finish 14th in the 200 freestyle in 2:11.41, and had that same placement in the 100 butterfly (59.88 seconds) behind Schmitt.
J-D was 27th in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:42.71 as Samantha Coombs joined Hair and the Coyne sisters in that event. Rachel Perry, swimming for Manlius-Pebble Hill, made her way to sixth place in the 100 backstroke in 58.42 seconds.
Maggie Fletcher’s best individual effort was in the 50 freestyle, where she was 21st in 24.82 seconds, and she won to take 25th place in the 500 freestyle in 5:14.76. Coughlin and Schmitt joined Maggie and Annie Fletcher as CBA got 15th place in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:42.71.
