Given the youth in the core of its lineup, the Liverpool boys cross country team might be in for much better results in the next couple of years.
For now, though, the Warriors could take a lot of pride in the sixth-place finish it put together during last Saturday’s state Federation championship meet at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.
Amid a 28-team field, Liverpool beat most of them, finishing with 216 points. Saratoga Springs, who edged out Fayetteville-Manlius for the state Class A title a week earlier (the Hornets didn’t run here), prevailed with 116 points as Arlington, St. Anthony’s, Warwick Valley and Northport rounded out the top 10.
Ben Petrella had Liverpool’s best individual finish, the freshman racing to a time of 16 minutes, 33.8 seconds to put him in 16th place, best among all ninth-graders in a field of 255 runners and barely half a minute behind the individual champion, Arlington’s Sebastian Hanson (16:00.7).
Sophomore Dan Muldoon made his way to 48th place, in 16:54.9, while junior Alex Christensen took 73rd place in 17:07 flat. Senior Travis Chewning-Kulick was 91st in 17:18.2, eight spots ahead of sophomore Connor Buck, who finished in 17:21.3.
Senior Drew Henry finished in 17:36.2, edging out another sophomore, Nick LeClair, who was in the middle of the pack in 17:40.9.
