The fundraising totals are in for the sixth annual Habitat for Humanity Chicken BBQ, a joint effort of Marcellus’ four churches.
According to publicity chair Carolynn Longuil, the Oct. 27 event raised $3,672 for Syracuse Habitat for Humanity’s Interfaith Build, surpassing last year’s fundraising total by $289. The funds will be used to help build a home at 655 Gifford St. in Syracuse.
The event served up 355 chicken BBQ dinners for a profit of $2,858 with $700 raised through the pie auction. Desserts were baked by St. John’s Episcopal Church, salads were provided by St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, baked beans came from the First Presbyterian Church and the BBQ chicken and beverages were supplied by the United Methodist Church, which also hosted the event.
All proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity, since the food for the BBQ, the homemade pies and the supplies were all provided by the four churches, various individuals, Nojaims Market of Marcellus, Walmart and Wegmans. Event organizers wished to thank all those who attended the dinner, sold tickets, prepared and served meals, and cleaned up on the day of the event.
This year’s event brought the total funds raised for Habitat to more than $22,000 over six years. During that time, several people from the four churches have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity to help with the Interfaith Builds on Syracuse’s Near West Side.
