If you’re consciously downsizing your consumption of sweets, Jo’s Li’l Cupcake might become your new favorite bakery.
Shirley and Mike Martin plan to open their new business on Election Day, Nov. 6, at 141 First St., in the village of Liverpool.
On Oct. 22, the Liverpool Village Planning Board approved the Martins’ site plan for Jo’s Li’l Cupcake shop. The couple will set up four tables with four chairs each for a maximum seating capacity of 16. The site plan showed more than 20 available parking spaces including 15 on the property and others on the street. That location, 141 First St., formerly housed Chris’s Flowers Etc.
The Martins are leasing the space from building-owner Linda Blanding of Camillus.
While Jo’s Li’l Cupcake will serve cupcakes in varied flavors, it will serve only one size: small. Its frosting-bedecked mini-cupcakes are about the size of a standard D battery, only shorter.
“That’s what the Li’l means in the name we chose, Jo’s Li’l Cupcake,” Mike Martin said. The couple named the shop after their pet dog, Jo, a 12-year-old male terrier.
The shop will also sell pet treats such as oatmeal-and-bacon cookies in the shape of a dog bone.
For humans, there will be tiny pies and little loaves of fancy breads. The mini-cupcakes will range from simple chocolate cake with vanilla frosting to an orange cake with blue cream filling.
“We have about 50 recipes right now,” Mike said, “and we’ll be putting 15 on display every day.” The little cupcakes will cost $1 apiece or $5 for a box of six.
The Martins are doing business with local vendors exclusively. Customers will order Paul de Lima coffee cooled by cream from Byrne Dairy. Apple cider will come from Beak & Skiff. Jo’s will stock 10 varieties of soda pop. “It’s 100 percent New York state,” Mike said.
