The village of Skaneateles has received two grants to help increase village police department enforcement of seat belt usage and DWI prevention. The grants were announced at the Oct. 25 village board meeting.
The “Buckle Up New York” award for $1,000 was given to the village by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee to increase seat belt usage in an effort to reduce injury or death from traffic accidents. The money will be used in spring 2013 for the annual Buckle Up New York seatbelt enforcement efforts, which typically run for 10 to 15 days in May or June.
Onondaga County also approved a $284 Stop DWI grant for the village, which was used to fund two extra four-hour police officer shifts on Saturday, Oct. 27, for anti-DWI efforts on Halloween weekend.
Also at the meeting, the board:
—Announced a public presentation on the status of the new village hall project for 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Skaneateles Fire Hall.
—Announced that West Lake Street was paved last week and work begun on the Prentiss Drive pedestrian path.
—Announced that Jerome Fire Equipment Company agreed to a 30-day extension to the village’s bid award for the purchase of 30 new air packs — portable breathing apparatus — in order to await the outcome of the fire department’s application for a federal grant.
—Accepted the resignation of Mary Kate Shane from the Housing Authority, and appointed Anne Buehler to fill the vacancy.
