Anything less than the Baldwinsville volleyball teams sweeping both of the Section III Class AA championships would be a surprise now.
When the girls Bees took on 11-2 Fayetteville-Manlius last Monday night at the Baker High School gym, the possible sectional finals preview turned into yet another B’ville showcase as it prevailed 25-12, 25-16, 25-9.
Madison Whitney’s five aces set a good tone, as she also got four kills and two digs. Up front, Lexi Lagoy led with 10 kills and three blocks, while Allegra Lee Bell gained seven kills and Amanda May finished with five kills. Maureen Thayer passed to this front line with her 25 assists as Danielle Sayler added four digs.
The boys Bees, off its first defeat of the season to Rochester McQuaid, roared back to form last Monday night, at Jamesville-DeWitt, sweeping past the Red Rams 25-19, 25-11, 25-15.
Shawn Calnan managed eight kills, two kills and two assists. Grady Schmidt had five kills, while Delsean Griffith put up four kills and Zach Leo added three kills. Chris Drain passed to all of them, earning 16 assists, as Tyler Weber had a team-best three digs.
Then B’ville roared past Syracuse 25-15, 25-6, 25-8 two nights later. Not only did Chris Drain get 17 assists, he served up eight aces as Tom Ancilotti posted a team-best five kills. Cliff Peterson and Delsean Griffith each got three kills, with Calnan and Anthony DeMarco posting two kills apiece.
On Thursday night, B’ville, the no. 2 seed in the sectional Class AA playoffs, meet no. 3 seed Fayetteville-Manlius in the AA semifinals.
One night after the boys Bees play, it’s the B’ville’s girls turn to play in the Class AA semifinals as the top seed against the survivor of the West Genesee-Liverpool match earlier in the week. Both championship matches take place next Wednesday at the C-NS gymnasium.
