On the last Saturday in September, soccer teams from Fayetteville-Manilus and Christian Brothers Academy gathered together for their annual doubleheader, this time held on the Hornets’ home turf.
And as he had done all week, the Brothers’ Andrew DePerro commanded the spotlight, pushing his Brothers to a 3-1 victory over the Hornets in the second half of that doubleheader, after the girls sides played to a 2-2 draw.
DePerro had already scored three-goal hat tricks in wins over Jamesville-DeWitt (4-0) and Homer (3-1) earlier in the week, and even F-M’s usually-strong defense could to little to contain him.
CBA led, 2-1 at the break, and tacked on an insurance goal in the second half as DePerro found the net twice, giving him eight goals for the week. Matt Marzocchi had the other goal, with Tim Corapi and Matt DePerro earning assists.
Chris Wang produced F-M’s lone goal, assisted by Tyler Snow. Jim Brady and Ben Obrist split time in goal and combined for 12 saves. CBA keeper Mike Smith played the whole way and made eight saves.
This followed the 2-2 draw between the CBA and F-M girls, which went back and forth. The Brothers gained a 1-0 edge in the first half, only to have the Hornets pull even in the second half.
During overtime, CBA again moved out in front during the first extra period, and again F-M equalized in the second extra period to salvage the tie.
Eva Gordon scored one goal for the Brothers and assisted on Marisa Romeo’s tally. On the Hornets’ side, Alexis Muraco and Ani Villalba both scored and assisted on each other’s goals. CBA goalie Lindsey Evans made 10 saves, two more than Nina Quigley.
It had already been a big week for F-M’s girls, as it had earned a high-quality win last Tuesday afternoon when it defeated West Genesee 3-1.
The Wildcats arrived with a 6-2 record, but the Hornets jumped all over them, getting all of its goals in the first half. Then, with that two-goal edge, F-M fended off all of WG’s late charges to stay out in front.
This led to Thursday’s game at Oswego, where the Hornets struck for all of its goals in the first half and beat the Buccaneers 4-1.
Before Oswego’s defense could settle down in any way, F-M had built its winning margin. Cheyenne Hall did most of that building, scoring twice and adding an assist as Alexis Muraco and Alexa Restante earned the other goals. Rachel Dise picked up a pair of assists and Alessandra Armstrong got an assist, too.
On that same day, F-M had little trouble putting away the Auburn Maroons in a 4-0 shutout. The Hornets took 25 shots, and found the net twice in each half. Aaron Epling, with three assists, anchored the attack as Tyler Snow, Chris Wang, Paul Kwoyelo and Connor Treglia each picked up one goal.
