So the next chapter starts for the Cazenovia girls cross country team, minus many of the familiar names that produced championship results both here and in indoor and outdoor track for the Lakers, too.
Still, Cazenovia has a lot to be excited about, as it showed during Saturday’s Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Invitational, held on the same course where the Section III championships will take place on Nov. 3.
Running in the Varsity 3 event, Cazenovia picked up 104 points, safely fitting into third place. Only Liverpool, with 45 points, and Westhill/Bishop Ludden, with 68 points, did better in a 16-team field.
Junior Jeannette Cudney led the Lakers’ efforts, rising to fourth place in 20 minutes, 27.3 seconds, though it was behind the torrid winning pace set by Fabius-Pompey’s Erin McConnell (18:43.6).
Another junior, Megan Stanford, landed in 16th place in 21:49.2, while junior Malone Gabor worked her way to 31st place in 22:32.2. Mimi Gabor, a freshman, was 35th (23:00.1) as Margaret Wolsey (23:09.7), Victoria Wright (23:16.2) and Adrien Owens (23:32.5) closely followed.
As for the Cazenovia boys team, it took 12th out of 15 teams in Varsity 3 with 322 points. Sean Satchwell had the top individual performance, the sophomore getting to 50th place in 19:27.1. Kevin Ridings (20:12.3) and Drew Devendorf (20:29.7) had the next-best efforts.
Chittenango’s girls team finished 11th out of 14 teams in the Varsity 4 race, though freshman Kaitlyn Janczuk did well as she rose to 20th place in a time of 22:34 flat.
