The bicyclist who died in an accident this morning on Fremont Road has been identified as Austin Elmore, 17, a student at East Syracuse Minoa Central High School.
Elmore was biking north on Fremont Road near the high school at around 7:55 a.m. when he attempted to cross Kirkville Road and was hit by an eastbound vehicle, Manlius Police said. The East Syracuse resident was thrown from his bicycle and suffered fatal injuries.
“The East Syracuse Minoa Central School District mourns the tragic loss of Austin and we extend our deepest, heartfelt sympathy to his family,” said Superintendent Donna DeSiato.
Elmore was an artist; he received a Gold Key Award in the 2012 CNY Scholastic Art Awards for a self-portrait drawing.
“Austin was a fine young man and a talented artist,” the superintendent said. “Our school community is grieving at this time.”
The high school is offering counseling services from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. throughout the week in response to Elmore’s sudden death.
The driver of the vehicle that hit him suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital, from which he has since been released.
Manlius Police are seeking the public’s helping in determining what led to the accident. Witnesses are asked to call 682-2212 or email [email protected].
