Brendan Polsin, a graduating senior from Baker High School, fired an even-par 72 winning the Optimists sectional qualifier at Timber Banks Golf Course.
The Sectional Qualifier featured some of the regions best junior golfers. West Genesee’s John Clare, fresh off a tie for fifth-place in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament, was second, shooting a 74.
With the win, Polsin advances to the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships July 24-29th at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Clare also qualified. Rochester’s Matthew Van Niekerk is the first alternate.
The Optimist Junior Golf Program is a national golf program for juniors ages 10-18. More than 5,000 boys and girls throughout the United States and Canada and in several foreign countries compete in Optimist qualifying tournaments to see who advances to the nationals.
Former champions and top finishers of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships include professionals like Beth Bauer, Jonathan Byrd, Jason Day, Bill Haas, Brittany Lincicome, Jeff Overton, Stacy Prammanasudh and Jennifer Rosales.
