Offering a storybook ending to her high school career, Cazenovia senior Paige Biviano earned a victory in the Division II pentathlon at the state track and field championship meet, held Friday and Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium.
It all began with the 100-meter hurdles, where Biviano ran 15.51 seconds, second in her division to Schalmont’s Isabella Borini, with whom she would duel throughout the meet.
In the high jump, Biviano cleared 5 feet 3 3/4 inches, beating Borini by 1 1/4 inches. But the real break came in the shot put, where Biviano threw it 30 feet 6 1/2 inches, best among all competitors in either division. She beat Borini by 133 points in that event alone.
That cushion was needed, because after Biviano went 16 feet 2 1/4 inches in the long jump (again the best in Division II), Biviano ran 800 meters in 2:38.95, behind Borini’s 2:32.75.
But with those 585 points in the finale, Biviano finished with 3,143 points, which beat Borini’s total of 3,049 points. Also, Biviano finished second overall, only topped by Division I competitor Stephanie Izard (Sweet Home), who had 3,374 points.
Meanwhile, Ashley Winn came within striking distance of three different sprint titles – two by herself, one with teammates Jillian Vogl, Ashley Kent and Anna Schultz in the 4×100 relay.
By herself, Winn qualified first for the final of the Division II 100-meter dash in 12.16 seconds. However, in the final Winn slowed to 12.81 seconds, which left her back in third place as Maple Grove’s Christina Walter prevailed in 12.46 seconds.
In the 200-meter dash, Winn had close to the same result, qualifying on Friday in second place with a time of 25.40 seconds, but going 26.18 seconds in the final, which left her fourth as, again, Walter (25.46 seconds) went to the top spot.
Cazenovia’s effort in the 4×100 was a solid one. Winn, Vogl, Schultz and Kent finished in 50.60 seconds, beating all of the Division II entrants except Beekmantown (Section II), who won the event in 50.12 seconds.
On her own, Vogl tore to a time of 57.77 seconds in the 400-meter dash and finished fourth – this at the same C-NS venue where she helped Cazenovia win back-to-back field hockey state Class C championships in 2010 and 2011.
Caroline Marshall, the school record-holder in the 1,500-meter run, finished fifth in her Saturday heat, 10th in Division II and 15th overall with a time of 4:46.10. Bronxville’s Mary Cain, one of the nation’s fastest scholastic runners, won in 4:19.78.
