As it had done throughout the spring, the Skaneateles girls track and field team found itself chasing Cazenovia in Thursday’s Section III Class B-1 championship meet at Marcellus High School.
By meet’s end, Skaneateles had picked up 88 points, but that barely was half the total those other Lakers gained as, with 165 points, Cazenovia easily finished in front.
Still, sophomore Madeline Adams had a superb effort. Adams won the 3,000-meter run in 10 minutes, 39.01 seconds, more than half a minute ahead of Cazenovia’s Rae Tobey. Adams took second in the 1,500-meter run in 4:52.60 as another Cazenovia rival, Caroline Marshall, won in 4:44.59.
And Kaela Fiutak mastered the pole vault again, tying her season-best clearance of 10 feet 6 inches, which was a foot and a half better than Cazenovia’s Liz Pittman.
Skaneateles won two of the three relay events. In the 4×800, Skaneateles went to the front as seniors Erin Tonzi and Courtney Pitman joined freshmen Jenn DeRosa and Liz Dwyer for a top time of 10:07.86, leaving Marcellus (10:14.60) in the runner-up spot.
And the Lakers also prevailed in the 4×400, where two sophomores, Taylor Woodruff and Anna Barnett, helped Pitman and Tonzi post 4:15.03, topping second-place Homer by 1.15 seconds.
On her own, Woodruff had a solid showing as she was third in the 200-meter dash in 27.17 seconds, took fourth in the 100-meter dash in 13.19 seconds and had a fifth-place long jump of 15’4 ¼”, just ahead of Nikki Cole in seventh place.
