Whether fresh from spring work or back from a fall and winter break, the area’s boys and girls golf teams hit the links for their various Section III championships.
It started with Monday’s boys Class B tournament at Kanon Valley in Oneida, where Cazenovia finished fourth in a 14-team field with a score of 410, one shot behind third-place Marcellus. Westhill took team honors with 401 as South Jefferson (405) was third.
Nick Christakos worked his way to a 77, five over par, and a tie for third, just one shot behind the co-medalists, South Jefferson’s Ryan Clark and Ilion’s Dan North. Not far behind them, Trevor Gatzke posted an 80, while Matt Schaffner finished with an 81.
Chittenango, whose regular season spanned from August through October, returned from a seven-month hiatus and went to Radisson Greens for the Class A tournament, where it shot 481 for fifth place, well off New Hartford’s winning total of 385.
Still, Mike McIntosh gave the Bears a four-over-par total of 76 and was alone in third place behind New Hartford’s talented brother tandem of Derek and Alec Bard, each of whom shot one-under 71. The victorious Spartans had five of the top eight finishers.
A day later, it was the girls turn, as Cazenovia and Chittenango both went to Baldwinsville’s Foxfire course for the annual Section III tournament. The Lakers posted a team score of 448, behind Jamesville-DeWitt, who won the Division II honors with 385.
Kelsi Fredericks led Cazenovia, tying for 21st place with a score of 104, while Meg Arnold paced the Bears with 106. Also for the Lakers, Danielle Mevec had a 109, with Maggie Carpenter (112) and Maddie Ellithorpe (123) behind her. Chittenango’s Megan Geariety had a 110.
