Together, West Genesee boys tennis stars Brent and Garrett Boleslav are quite formidable.
Good enough, in fact, to earn victory in the first doubles division at last week’s Section III Class A tournament, held at Syracuse University’s SkyTop Courts.
Remarkably, the final was a match between brother tandems, as the Boleslavs squared off with East Syracuse-Minoa’s brother tandem of Parker and Brandon Stone.
Beaten in the first set 7-5, Brent and Garrett seemed to gain strength as the match went on, claiming the second set 6-2 to even the match and closing it out in the third set by that same 6-2 margin.
Over in second doubles, Erik Breault and Tyler Arnold also made their way to the finals, but could not take the last step as Brooks Nagle and Alex McCarthy (Fayetteville-Manlius) beat them 6-3, 6-0 for the championship.
When the team tournament was done, WG had tied Baldwinsville for second, with 30 points, not even half the total of the Hornets, who won all three singles divisions and got 63 points.
In Class B, Marcellus had four players get to third-place matches – James Garzia in first singles, Sean Dunn in third singles and Shane Barner and Andrew Herold in third doubles.
Barner and Herold would prevail, beating CBA’s tandem of Greg Maziuk and Barnes Werner in three sets 7-5, 3-6, 6-1. Garzia, against New Hartford’s Vishnu Kakuturi, had a 6-4, 6-4 defeat, while Dunn ran into Oneida’s Jeff Coulter and lost 6-2, 6-2.
