Perfect within the OHSL Liberty division, the Westhill boys golf team took that good work to Oneida’s Kanon Valley course Monday afternoon and brought home the Section III Class B championship.
The Warriors shot 401 as a team, prevailing in a close four-way battle. Marcellus was third in 409, with runner-up South Jefferson (405) in between and Cazenovia (410) in fourth.
Individually, Ryan Conroy led Westhill with a 78, six over par, tied for sixth, two shots behind the co-medalists, South Jefferson’s Ryan Clark and Ilion’s Dan North.
However, the Warriors prevailed by having its next three players – Mike Marshall, Nate Miesner and Andy Vadnais – each shoot 79 to tie for sixth place.
Ryan Bonk land Garrett Thompson led Marcellus, sharing 11th place with an 80. Close behind them, Jack Mordaunt and Alec Mosher both posted 82, making it four Mustangs advancing to the state qualifier this weekend at Colgate University’s Seven Oaks course in Hamilton.
Over in the Class C tournament at Barker Brook in Oriskany Falls, Bishop Ludden’s William Wallace tied for the individual championship with Port Byron’s Dan O’Hara.
Wallace and O’Hara each shot a 77, five over par, one shot ahead of Utica-Notre Dame’s Mik Kalil and Frankfort-Schuyler’s Dante Migliore.
As a team, the Gaelic Knights claimed second place, with 430, beaten only by Herkimer’s total of 414. Kevin Sierotnik and Tom Vasquez each shot 85 to join Wallace at Seven Oaks.
Four players from West Genesee – John Clare, Louis Ciarla, Bryan Semple and Nick Smith – will join them, having earned their berths in the Class AA tournament at Green Lakes back in October.
A day after the boys played in their sectional tournaments, the girls had their turn, returning to Foxfire to battle for Section III honors.
Westhill’s Nicole Deming tied for 12th place, posting a 91, just three shots above the state qualifying cutline of 88. The Warriors had a team total of 423 Laura Nanno added a 102, while Kalia Zell-Barrow had a 110 and Shannon Bunce managed a 120.
West Genesee finished at 408, fifth among Division I (large school sides), as senior Bridget Hohl shot a team-best 96 for the Wildcats.
Rachel Kavney and Bri Corcoran matched each other with 102 in the next wave as Danielle Schmidt added 108. For Marcellus, Bethanie Abbott shot 111 and Avery Mordaunt added 116.
