In a span of 23 days, Baldwinsville’s track and field teams will make as many as seven trips to Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium for various competitions, all the way to the state championships on June 8 and 9.
But it started with last weekend’s invitational meets. And in the inaugural C-NS Star-Light Girls Invitational on Friday, the Bees finished well out in front, earning 149 points, more than double the total of runner-up West Genesee, who had 73 points.
B’ville, in particular, lit up the sprints. Gabby Jordan, in the 100-meter dash, prevailed in 12.97 seconds, while Stephanie Vasteno was third in 13.24 seconds.
And the Bees went 1-2 in the 400-meter dash, where Quaneisha Ivey prevailed in 1:01.93 and Marissa Lathrop was second in 1:02.76. Moving to the 200-meter dash, Gina Carnovale beat the field in 25.91 seconds, leaving Angelica Tomasello third in 27.06 seconds.
The distance events also provided lots of points, including the 3,000-meter run, where Annie Peterson won in 11:00.56 and Hannah Olds (11:48.40) completed another 1-2 sweep.
Mackenzie Ross roared to victory in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:21.83, topping, among others. Nicole Piontkowski, who was third in 2:26.96. Mia Bolton was third in the 1,500-meter run in 5:12.56, just ahead of Julia Johnson (5:16.92) in fourth.
Of the three relays, B’ville won two of them. Jordan, Tomasello, Carnovale and Cierra Allen roared to first in the 4×400 in 4:03.76, nearly half a minute ahead of the field, while Ross, Piontkowski, Kim Cushman and Chandra Hewitt were victorious in the 4×800 in 10:23.11.
Two more victories came in field events, where Carlie McNamara unleashed a discus throw of 94 feet 11 inches, her best of the season, and Emily Soeder took the high jump by clearing 5 feet. Vasteno and Lauren Fisher tied for sixth in the pole vault.
A day later, the Baldwinsville boys track team went to the C-NS Invitational, where with 57 points it landed in third place in a field of 18. The host Northstars won with 98 points.
Shay Sargeant would win the 100 sprint, as his time of 11.06 seconds topped C-NS’s Mark Broughton (11.17) and just beat the 11.07 Sargeant put up in qualifying.
Also, Sargeant got to fifth place in the long jump with 20’2, with Tyler Rouse sixth (20’ ¾”) and also teamed with Rouse, Brian Mahar and Rickey Sparks for second in the 4×100 relay in 45.02 seconds, just behind Corcoran (44.69 seconds) at the wire.
The quartet of Alec Peinkofer, Matt Pond, Connor Ross and Josh Perez tore to victory in the 4×800 in 8:23.46, more than 10 seconds ahead of runner-up Holland Patent (8:35.08).
In the 4×400, B’ville won again as Andy Fleming, Nate Wicks, Dan Walker and Jeff Mahar hit the line in 3:28.73, with C-NS (3:37.68) nearly nine seconds behind in the runner-up spot.
Andy Fleming contended in the 800, breaking the two-minute mark in 1:59.64 as he took second to Phoenix’s Jeff Wells (1:57.94).
Jeff Mahar landed in fifth in the 400 sprint in 51.68 seconds. Josh Perez was sixth (10:39.54) in the 3,000 steeplechase, while Antonio Martinez took sixth in the mile in 4:40.63, just ahead of teammate Nate LoParco in seventh.
