A Syracuse man has been charged with numerous misdemeanors and felonies after a routine traffic stop turned into a police chase.
Keith Byrd, 22, has been charged with two counts third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree unlawfully fleeing police in a motor vehicle, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, reckless driving, speeding and passing stop signs.
Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh alleges Byrd passed through a stop sign at the intersection of Leighton and Galster Avenue in the town of DeWitt. When Sheriff deputies attempted to stop Byrd, police say he turned onto Woodbury Avenue, then Craigie Street where he sped off and lost control of his SUV. Byrd’s SUV crashed into the foundation of a home on North Avenue.
Byrd was taken into custody there. His passenger, Mia Kadah, 24, was extricated from the vehicle by the East Syracuse Fire Department.
Police say they recovered 46.6 grams of cocaine from Byrd’s vehicle. He was arraigned in town of DeWitt court Wednesday night.
