From distance races to field events to sprints to the pentathlon, the Christian Brothers Academy boys track and field team had answers in every discipline.
As a result, the Brothers won Monday’s Onondaga High School League Liberty division championship meet at Marcellus, earning 132 points. Hannibal was second with 108 points, while the host Mustangs (72 points) finished third.
Brendan Smith pulled off a hard-working double. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, his time of 10 minutes, 49.70 seconds beat the field by nearly eight seconds, with Will Adams in sixth. In the 3,200-meter run Smith, in 9:20.80, set a season-best mark as teammate David Carey was third in 10:31.05.
This came on the heels of Smith going to the Loucks Games in White Plains the previous weekend and, with a time of 9:20.23 in the steeplechase, breaking the Section III record and setting the state’s fastest time in that event.
Dametrius Brown, in the 100-meter dash, beat out Solvay’s Nick Cometti, 11.37 seconds to Cometti’s 11.48, and nearly won the 200-meter dash, too, as his 23.38 seconds was just behind Cometti, who won in 23.38 seconds.
Moving to field events, Dan Predmore unleashed a winning discus throw of 157 feet 7 inches, bettering the rest of the competition by more than 21 feet as Connor Agnew (106 feet) was sixth. In the shot put, Predmore was second with 44’1”, with teammate Deshawn Salter (43’9 ¼”) in third.
Kevin Frasier rolled to first place in the 400-meter dash, setting a new season mark in 50.45 seconds to easily top Hannibal’s Ben Griffin, who was second in 51.03 seconds. Jared Sayles, already third in the long jump with 19’1”, added a third in the 800-meter run in 2:04.68, with Jack Brower (2:08.93) in fifth place. Liam Price was sixth in the 110 high hurdles.
Aaron Morgan (24.32 seconds) was sixth in the 200, but he was victorious in the 4×100 relay, helping Salter, Nate Fornal and Andrew DePerro as the Brothers, in 45.22 seconds, beat Marcellus by 2.64 seconds. Frasier, Jared Sayles, Danny O’Connorand Clarke Cady were second (3:53.73) in the 4×400 relay, and CBA took sixth in the 4×800.
Will Brower easily won the pentathlon, amassing 2,489 points to beat Hannibal’s Nate Welling (1,692 points) and Jordan-Elbridge’s Tyler Jackson (1,210 points), the other two competitors. Ryan Vignogna rose to sixth in the pole vault, clearing 9’6”.
Of CBA’s 23 points in the OHSL Liberty girls meet, nearly half of them came from a closely-fought pentathlon, where Marisa Hamel picked up 2,199 points, enough to hold off Skaneateles’ Mary Buck (2,132 points) for the victory.
Monica Perrone was fourth in the 100 sprint in 13.86 seconds, while Anna Schug got to fourth (1:01.37) in the 400-meter dash and also was fourth in the 200 sprint in 28.42 seconds. Gabrielle Schug was sixth in the 1,500-meter run in 5:19.76.
