All the rain stopped just as the Marcellus, Solvay and Westhill/Bishop Ludden track and field teams got together for a big local meet Tuesday afternoon on the Mustangs’ home track.
The Marcellus girls team earned the first of two sweeps, improving its league mark to 5-2-1 by topping Westhill/Ludden 85-55 and beating Solvay 102-39.
Rachel Garn pulled off a sweep of the distance events to complete a remarkable six-day stretch. Garn was first in the 800-meter run in 2:25.1, needed 5:07.6 to claim the 1,500-meter run and, in the 3,000-meter event, prevailed in 11:23.1.
And this came on the heels of Garn winning the 800 at the CBA Brother Basilian Invitational on May 4 and, a day after that, breaking the school record (7:23.4) in the 2,000-meter steeplechase at another meet in Auburn.
Abby Fallon played a leading role for the Mustangs, too. She finished first in the 100-meter dash in 13.6 seconds, claimed the 200-meter dash in 28.7 seconds, beat the field in the long jump with 13 feet 11 inches. Fallon teamed with Kathryn Busa, Shannon Twombly and Nellie Ramsden to win the 4×100 in 55.6 seconds.
Moving to field events, Sarah Francesconi set a personal mark in the triple jump, going 29 feet, and also cleared 4’8” to win the high jump.
On both ends, it was Marcellus emerging victorious. The boys meet saw the Mustangs fighting past the Warriors 75-66 and handling the Bearcats by a 94-48 margin. Westhill/Ludden toppled Solvay 98-45.
Marcellus based its sweep on winning all of the distance races. Joe Fallon led the way, going through the mile in 4:45.5 and also claiming the 800 in 2:09.1.
John Bell added a 3,200-meter title in 10:19.9, this after teaming with Fallon, Ryan Manahan and Alex Zamojski to claim a victory in the 4×800 relay in 9:10.6. Manahan and Fallon joined Justin Garn on the winning side in the 4×400 relay as Marcellus got a time of 3:51.6.
Meanwhile, Westhill/Ludden turned to its specialists. , Jack Honis took the 100 sprint in 11.5 seconds, ran the 110 high hurdles in 15.6 seconds and also beat the field in the 400 hurdles in 1:00.5 for a third title.
Corey Wilkinson threw the shot put 41’1” and also tossed the discus 108’11”, easily claiming both titles, while Christian St. Amour was first in the 200 in 23.5 seconds.
Other field events were split. Solvay’s Brian McLeod claimed titles in the long jump and triple jump, while Brian O’Connell cleared 5’8” to give Marcellus a victory in the high jump.
