Eagle Newspapers writers were among journalists honored with awards for excellence in their field at recent award ceremonies.
“I’m very pleased that the hard work of our editorial staff has been recognized both locally and statewide,” said Eagle Publisher David Tyler. “Each week, these people develop stories that capture the essence of the communities we serve. It makes me proud to be associated with them.”
New York Press Association awards
Third place: Jason Emerson, editor of the Skaneateles Press, won third place for editorial writing.
Ami Olson, former editor of The Eagle, won third place in the feature story category for “Out of the darkness.”
Sarah Hall, editor of the Eagle Star-Review, earned an honorable mention for in-depth reporting for “Ending the Epidemic.”
Syracuse Press Club awards
Club Award winners included:
Hall, who won the Selwyn Kershaw Professional Standards Award, and Amanda Seef, who won the A. Brohmann Roth Newcomer Award.
“These awards are really well-deserved,” Tyler said. “I’ve worked with Sarah for a number of years, and she always handles herself and her responsibilities with an extremely high level of professionalism. I’ve only worked with Amanda for a few months, but she clearly is an excellent reporter who is motivated by bringing high-quality journalism to our readers.”
In the All Print division:
Herm Card of the The Eagle, won second place in the still photo, sports photo category with “Lessons Learned Outside the Classroom” and Ned Campbell, editor of The Eagle and the Eagle Bulletin, earned second place for his editorial, “Mannion made a contest a contest.”
In the Non-Daily Newspapers division:
Hall earned second place for human interest feature with “Taking a stand against suicide” and first place for her news feature, “Ending the epidemic.”
First place: Jason Emerson, editor of the Skaneateles Press, earned the Robert Haggard Award for Best Column for “Some of us need to remember: Football is only a game.”
Second place: Erin Smith, editor of the Baldwinsville Messenger, earned second place for her sports story, “State golf champ!”
Ami Olson, Doug Campbell, Jen Wing and Ken Jackson earned second place for front page design for Urban CNY.
In the Special Interest Print division:
First place: Farah Jadran, editor of Syracuse Woman Magazine, earned first place for her sports story, “Mother, wife, professional…triathlete” and second place for her human interest feature, “Pregnant and battling breast cancer… now what?”
