By the middle of April, the West Genesee girls lacrosse team had already achieved the impressive feat of sweeping all of its closest rivals for local Class A supremacy.
The completion of that sweep took place Monday night, when the Wildcats ventured to Liverpool and spread its production around, leading to a 13-8 victory over the Warriors.
Early-season wins over Baldwinsville and Fayetteville-Manlius, plus a tough 10-9 conquest of defending state Class C champion CBA on April 10, had highlighted WG’s tough early slate.
Now, at Liverpool, the Wildcats enforced its fast tempo on Liverpool, getting open looks at the net throughout the first half and converting often.
That translated into an 8-4 halftime lead, and though Andrea Flood kept the Warriors within sight thanks to a game-high five goals, she did not get much help on the attack.
By contrast, five different WG players had multiple goals. Erica Geremia led with three goals, while Emily Tripodi, Shannon Hawley, Nicole Bello and Shannon Elmer each scored twice. Tripodi added three assists as Vicki Graveline and Kara Datellas had matching totals of one goal and one assist. Hawley and Madison Huegel earned assists, too.
On the defensive side, seniors Dana Anderson, Shelby Milne and Madison Huegel, along with sophomore Marissa Hudgins, shut down everyone except Flood, while two goalies, Rosie Bello and Andrea Francisco (each of them plays one half), combined for eight saves.
At week’s end, WG, boasting the no. 2 state Class A ranking and no. 4 national ranking in the ESPN Powerade FAB 50, hits the road for games in both New Jersey and Maryland to test itself against other nationally-ranked powers.
