A Cicero-North Syracuse track and field season that will culminate with hosting the June 8-9 state championship meet began with an event at a much smaller scale.
Still, the Northstars won both sides of the ninth annual C-NS Invitational, earning 100 points on the girls side to easily outdistance the field and 92 points to top rival Liverpool (69 points) and a dozen other opponents.
For the boys, Neil Gill, Ken Ryan, Paul DeGennaro and Colin Greenseich ran in the mile relay, their times adding up to 19:03.72, well clear of the field as Liverpool took third in 19:24.65.
Yet C-NS also handled shorter distances, seeing Cameron Shaughnessy, Avery Yarn, Shawn Webb and Mark Broughton top the field in the 4×100 relay in 43.98 seconds. Liverpool was fifth in 47.24 seconds.
In the 400 hurdles, Frank Volino and Sam Nassar were second and fourth among individuals and won the relay in 1:58.08, with no other side under 2:10. Volino and Morgan Austen earned second in the 110 high hurdles in a combined 34.91 seconds.
Mike Hyde won the individual pole vault, clearing 12 feet as he and Shaughnessy (fourth) shared team honors with 23’6”. Joel Brousseau cleared 6’4” in the high jump, half a foot better than Liverpool’s Zach Harris, as Brousseau and Bryson Mayes, with a combined 12’, won and the Warriors (11’6”) tied Indian River for second.
Austen and Mayes won the triple jump, their combined attempts of 81 feet 8 inches more than a foot ahead of Ithaca, with Liverpool in fifth place.
Austin George and Joe Castaldo helped C-NS get second (82’ 10”) in the shot put, just ahead of Liverpool’s Nick Leedom and Joe Duffus (80’6”) in third place. Yarn and Brousseau were fourth in the long jump.
Liverpool had its own wins, too, including Zavon Watkins, Keewan Rondinello, Ryheim Lawes and Steve Fiorello claiming the 4×400 relay in 3:26.41, with C-NS (3:48.65) in fourth place. That same quartet also won the 1,600 sprint medley in a time of 3:35.67, the Northstars taking fifth place.
In the 4×800, the Warriors’ quartet of Connor Buck, Landon Veney, Alex Christensen and Dan Muldoon were second in 8:59.96, with the Northstars third as Bryan Junod, Evan Russell, Bryan Bausinger and Kevin Cialfi got a time of 9:08.50.
The Warriors’ duo of Chris Granell and Geoffrey Bell went 1-2 in the pole vault, as Granell won in 115’8” and Bell (115’5”) was just three inches behind.
Meanwhile, C-NS rolled on the girls side, Katie Osborne leading the way. First, she won the individual 100 hurdles, edging Cazenovia star Paige Biviano, 16.18 seconds to 16.24, and teaming with Hannah Szumloz for top honors with 33.36 seconds.
Then Osborne went to the long jump, going 16’ 5 ½”, with Javielle Fanizzi fifth and a team victory gained with 31’ 4 ¼”. Fanizzi was first in the individual 400 hurdles in 1:09.81, with Jade Jenkins third in 1:10.90 to help C-NS win again.
Maria LaMontagne (5:21.78) and Nicole Watterud (5:22.98) had the top two times in the mile, joined by Taylor Parry (fourth) and Katie Laris (sixth) to win in 21:44.98. Watterud, LaMontagne and Laris joined Marissa Colburn to win the 4×800 in 10:04.78.
Mariah Thomson had the top discus throw of 103’6”, a toss far ahead of the field as she and Candace Segars took team honors with 165’6”. Thomson and Jessica Wheeler were second (63’11”) in the shot put, but Wheeler won the pole vault, going 9’6” and teaming with Shannon McCarthy (7’6”) for yet another win.
McCarthy and Nicole Harringshaw were second in the high jump, clearing 9’6” between them. The Northstars were fifth in both the 4×100 and 4×400.
Liverpool, who gained 17 points for eighth place, had its best finish was a third in the pole vault, but it also got fourth in the discus and distance medley.
