If nothing else, the Baldwinsville boys lacrosse team aimed to delay the rush of history when it took on West Genesee last Friday afternoon.
The Wildcats’ head coach, Mike Messere, stood just three wins from matching the high school lacrosse all-time national record of 747 career wins set by Ward Melville’s Joe Cuozzo.
For the most part, B’ville’s defense did a solid job of containment, but it could not produce at all on the other end, leading to a 7-1 defeat.
WG got just one goal in the opening period. Then the Bees’ Austin McCaskill put a shot past Scott Sidnam in the second period, which would be the only B’ville goal of the afternoon.
Every other time the Bees pushed, either the Wildcats’ stingy man-to-man defense would take hold, or Sidnam would turn away a shot, getting 16 saves overall.
For his part, B’ville’s Parker Ferrigan managed 15 saves, with only Dan Ginestro (three goals) and Ryan St. Croix (two goals) getting multiple tallies on WG’s side.
With no time to rest, the Bees had to turn around Saturday and meet another Class A power, Fayetteville-Manlius, which led to a 15-6 loss to the Hornets.
At least in this game, there was some semblance of an attack. Steve Petrelli had two goals and one assist, with Matt Colclough, Ronnie Bertrand and Connor Chapman each finishing with one goal and one assist. Luke Evans had the other goal, with Ben Paprocki picking up an assist.
Still, F-M bolted out to a 10-3 halftime lead and, by himself, Kevin Lux matched the Bees by getting six goals overall. Clay Arnold (three goals, one assist) and Jimmy Krizman (two goals, three assists) offered the main support.
Before all this, the Bees earned its first win of the season, taking apart Auburn in a 13-1 romp at Holland Stadium.
B’ville, who had rested for more than a week following its season-opening defeat to Cazenovia on March 31, took some time to establish its attack, but still moved in front of the Maroons and carried a 5-1 edge to halftime.
The third quarter decided matters as the Bees put up six unanswered goals, further illustrating the deep fall of Auburn’s program from its heights as an annual title contender.
Luke Evans, with five goals, and Petrelli, with two goals and four assists, led the Bees’ charge. Dylan Bowman also found the net twice as Colin Gooley earned a goal and two assists. Matt Paddock, Nate Rutkowski and Spencer Ladd had the other goals.
Long road trips to Utica Proctor and Watertown IHC bookend a week where B’ville also plays Cicero-North Syracuse on Thursday night.
