Unlike so many other springs, the Cazenovia baseball team got to start its season on time, though that promptness did not translate into immediate success.
Going to Skaneateles for last Monday afternoon’s opener, Cazenovia made two different comebacks and led in the late going, but still took 10-8 loss in the battle of Laker teams.
Cazenovia was down 6-2 after three innings, only to tie it with four runs in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of poor Skaneateles defense as the hosts committed five errors overall.
After Skaneateles went back in front 7-6, the visitors scored twice in the top of the sixth and had an 8-7 edge, but Skaneateles got three runs in the bottom of that frame and kept Cazenovia off the board in the seventh.
Jack Malmsheimer and David McEntee each scored a pair of runs. Ben Langey, Ryker Smith, Alex Szlamczynski and Darian Smith scored one run apiece.
On the mound, Brian Gara went 3 2/3 innings, with Smith and Tanner Whiteman seeing relief assignments. For Skaneateles, Ryan Procna got the win, also earning two hits and two RBIs.
This served as a warm-up of sorts, for the next time the Lakers took the field, it was in Myrtle Beach, S.C., playing in the Mingo Bay Tournament during the April school break. The next OHSL Liberty division game is not until April 17, at Westhill.
