Boy will be boys.
Baldwinsville’s Cub Scouts Pack 248 had fun with this old adage during their annual Pinewood Derby held last month in the First Baptist Church’s basement.
A month long event, the Pinewood Derby begins with each participant receiving a kit containing a pinewood block, four nails and four plastic wheels. Cub Scouts then use the materials to make their derby car. The scouts can use outside materials to modify the design of their vehicle; however, the final product must weigh no more than five ounces and meet derby regulations. Participants can also enlist the help of parents and guardians in designing their entry.
This is a great opportunity for the boys to learn about good sportsmanship and healthy competition while also spending quality time with their fathers and mothers, said Pack 248’s leader Dan Allen, whose son won this year’s derby.
There were 38 entries in the elimination round held Saturday, Jan. 25. Of those participants, 18 advanced to the final round, which was held Tuesday, Jan. 28. With more than 100 spectators present, there was standing room only in the basement of Baldwinsville’s First Baptist Church as the boys prepared to race their entries on the new, six-lane digital track. First-grader Dan Allen won all of his races capturing the overall pack champion title, as well as first place in this year’s Pinewood Derby. First-grader Ayden Hickey came in second place followed by second-grader Aiden Kalim Delorio, who took third place.
This year’s Pinewood Derby was made possible thanks to: VanDerWater Enterprises, Lou’s Car Care Center and B&H Automotive (lane sponsors); Village Ace Hardware (community sponsor); and Charles Signs (sign sponsor).
“Thank you to all our sponsors,” Allen said.
The community also helped make this year a stand out. Thanks to record-breaking popcorn sales, Pack 248 was able to purchase a brand new, digital, six-lane aluminum track for the races, a piece of equipment that costs more than $4,000.
“We’d like to thank everyone in the community for purchasing a record setting year in popcorn sales, which enabled the pack to purchase a new six-lane, state-of-the-art aluminum track,” Allen said. “This track will last for generations.”
Cub Scouts consist of students in kindergarten through sixth grade, at which point the boys are eligible to join the Boy Scouts. For more information about Pack 248, contact Allen at 575-4444.
