Syracuse University has been awarded $55,750 to look into denials of the Freedom of Information Act.
The Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation announced today that Syracuse will be receiving those funds as part of $1.5 million in grants to 19 media outlets, schools and other journalism organizations in the nation.
Syracuse received the funds to compile records about every FOIA denial at the administrative level, going agency-by-agency. The grant will help them spotlight agencies who ignore the requirements of FOIA and provide poor denials.
The Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation works to invest in the future of journalism by building ethics, skills and opportunities to advance principled, probing news and information, a release said.
