Over consecutive days, the Jamesville-DeWitt and Christian Brothers Academy boys track and field teams would both earn Section III titles, and the girls Red Rams, won too.
In the Class A meet held Friday at SRC Arena, the J-D boys had 116 points, but the girls did even better, amassing 161 points to lap the field. Both times, the combined Westhill/Bishop Ludden sides would finish second.
The girls Rams swept through the field events, as expected. Danielle Doss won the pole vault, clearing 9 feet, with Katy Pieri (8 feet) second, with Maggie Fuller clearing 5 feet 2 inches to take the high jump. In the shot put, Sierra Vasiliou threw it 32 feet 1 ¾ inches, with Victoria Nandal (27 feet 6 ¼ inches) earning second place.
Vasiliou added a second (15 feet 6 ¾ inches) and Fuller took third in the long jump behind East Syracuse-Minoa’s Amanda Wall, who won with 15 feet 11 inches. Wall would also go 34 feet ½ inch in the triple jump, leaving J-D’s Patrece Martin (33 feet 11 inches) in the runner-up spot.
J-D also swept all three relay events. Vasiliou, Liz Pieri, Katy Pieri and Ally Fox tore through the 4×200 in 1:49.80, with Rachel Fairbanks, Laura Wengert, Samantha Clemons and Emilee Carpeneter taking the 4×800 in 10:15.12.
Fox, Liz Pieri, Katy Pieri and Danielle Doss swept to victory in the 4×400 relay in 4:16.71 as Liz Pieri, on her own, prevailed in the 300-meter dash in 43.49 seconds, leaving Doss in fourth.
Getting her own title, Fox won the 55-meter dash in 7.58 seconds, while Patrece Martin (8.07 seconds) was third. It was the same in the 55 hurdles, where Noelle Novakowski prevailed in 9.94 seconds and Amanda Lee (10.20 seconds) got to third.
East Syracuse-Minoa’s Gabby Pallotta broke up the J-D party, briefly, when she won the 3,000-meter run in 10:56.23, leaving the Rams’ Emilee Carpenter (11:08.91) in third.
Rachel Fairbanks took second in the 1,500-meter run in 4:57.24, where Palllotta was fourth. Laura Wengert was sixth in the 1,000-meter run behind ESM’s Juliette Miller in fifth.
Moving to the boys Class A meet, relays counted here, too. J-D’s quartet of Will Sterriker, Nate Sturgeon, Zach Liebmann and Navale Taylor prevailed in the 4×400 in 3:37.34, while Liebmann, Taumeras Howard, Amani Jackson and Marquis Drummond won the 4×200 in 1:37.46.
Jackson, in 6.68 seconds, and Howard, in 6.79 seconds, went 1-2 in the 55 sprint, while Sterriker was second in the 55 hurdles in 8.25 seconds and Sturgeon (8.39 seconds) was third. In the 300, Sterriker again got second place in 38.22 seconds, while Taylor was fourth. Sturgeon was fourth in the long jump and Taylor claimed fourth in the triple jump.
Isaac Tupper worked his way to a victory in the 1,000 in 2:51.24. Liebmann took second in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet 6 inches, Jack Healy was fourth in the 3,200-meter run in 10:31.70.
As for ESM, Mike Coogan emerged with a 600-meter victory in 1:27.06, which accounted for half of the Spartans’ 20 points. Jesse Perrone added a second in the mile in 4:54.85. Ryan Peters took third (45 feet 4 ½ inches) and Brian Roth was fifth in the shot put as Howard claimed fourth place in the high jump.
After all this, in Saturday’s sectional Class B meet it was CBA’s turn to shine. With 87 points, the Brothers outlasted Hannibal (68 points) and the rest of the 11-team field.
In a single meet, Brendan Smith nearly won three races. Smith claimed the mile in 4:37.01, won the 3,200 in 10:14.62 and “settled” for second place in the 1,000 in 2:39.76. Kevin Frasier got to third place in the 600 in 1:27.44, while David Carey got fifth in the mile and sixth in the 3,200.
Deshawn Salter, in 37.24 seconds, and Kevin Frasier, in 37.43 seconds, went 1-2 in the 300 sprint after Frasier was third (1:27.44) in the 600.
Salter got second in the 55 sprint in 6.78 seconds, just behind Solvay’s Nick Cometti (6.76 seconds), and helped Nate Fornal, Andre Dowdell and Zack Zajdel get to second in the 4×200 in 1:39.12. Dowdell was second in the long jump (19 feet 9 ¼ inches) and third in the triple jump (39 feet 2 ½ inches).
