Over the course of two days, a full complement of local indoor track and field athletes would seek out Section III championships at SRC Arena.
The Class AA and A events took place Friday, as Westhill/Bishop Ludden’s combined unit was second in Class A on both sides – 78 points for the girls, 69 points for the boys – each time behind Jamesville-DeWitt, who swept the team honors.
Westhill/Ludden’s girls gained 30 points from the 1,000-meter run, where Jessica Curry won in 3:06.45, inches ahead of Betsy Black (3:06.83), with Annabel Coolican third and Caroline Coates landing in fourth place.
Curry returned to win the 1,500-meter run in 4:55.10, with Black (5:03.75) in third. Emily Mizer stepped in to win the 600-meter run, edging Oneida’ Kim DeCarr, 1:43.57 to DeCarr’s 1:43.61, while also taking third in the 300-meter dash.
Westhill/Ludden got to third (2:07.11) in the 4×200 relay, while in field events Kayla Wild took third (27 feet 4 ¾ inches) and Maya Vortice (27 feet 1 inch) in the shot put.
In the boys Class A meet, Jack Honis dominated the 55-meter hurdles, prevailing in 7.88 seconds as he added a fourth in the 55-meter dash.
Corey Wilkinson won the shot put, heaving it 49 feet 9 ¾ inches, with teammate Tre Feisinger second as he tossed it 45 feet 7 ½ inches.
Christian St. Amour got second in the 600 in 1:29.53, with Owen Nicola (1:32.02) in third place. Kyle Fitch and Vincenzo Carr claimed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the mile, and Dan DeMauro was sixth in the 3,200-meter run.
Nicola, St. Amour, Jon Moore and Mike Herholtz rose to second in the 4×800 relay, its time of 9:32.84 just behind Chittenango (9:31.67) for the top spot. Herholtz added a fourth in the pole vault as Mike Crisalli took fifth in the long jump.
Up in Class AA, West Genesee’s boys had more points (26) than the girls (25), but finished seventh, as compared to the girls Wildcats’ fifth-place effort. Fayetteville-Manlius won both sides of the AA meet.
Brianna Richardson had WG’s best girls effort, going 33 feet 9 inches for second place in the triple jump, one inch behind Cicero-North Syracuse’s Javielle Fanizzi.
Abby Uczen cleared 7 feet 6 inches to nab third place in the pole vault. Kelly Powell broke through the flood of F-M distance runners to take fourth in the 600 in 1:46.86. Powell, Amy Hannahan, Lindsey Weaver and Alyssa Zeman were third in the 4×800 relay in 10:22.31.
Martin Leff gave the WG boys team a second-place time of 9:42.86 in the 3,200, as F-M’s Bryce Millar won in 9:40.99. Leff also took sixth in the mile as he, along with Mark Reilly, Ethan Osborne and Nate Conroy, rose to third in the 4×800 in 8:28.65.
The Wildcats were also fourth in the 4×400 in 3:35.12 as Luke Potash, who ran in that relay, earned fifth (37.83 seconds) in the 300 sprint. Peter James cleared 10 feet 6 inches for fourth place in the pole vault.
When the Class B meet took place on Saturday, Marcellus finished fifth on the girls side with 38 points, ahead of Solvay (16 points) and Jordan-Elbridge (13 points).
For the Mustangs, Rachel Garn won the 1,000 in a time of 3:06.08 and would tack on another victory in the 600 in 1:44.68. Daniela Henle was second in the high jump, clearing 4 feet 10 inches. Marcellus also took fourth in the 4×800 as Kathryn Busa and Makenzie Felicia were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 55 hurdles
Solvay’s Kyndra Jackson won the shot put, tossing it 32 feet 9 ½ inches as J-E’s Megan Greenwood (30 feet 2 ½ inches) was third. Abby Frateschi cleared 8 feet in the pole vault, earning third place. The Eagles were fourth in the 4×400 in 4:36.89.
In the boys Class B meet, Solvay was seventh, with 37 points, just ahead of Marcellus (25 points) in eighth and J-E (14 points) in 10th place.
The Bearcats’ Nick Cometti won the 55 sprint, edging CBA’s Deshawn Salter, 6.76 seconds to 6.78. John Salvagno also prevailed, holding off Ilion’s Dan Ward, 8.35 seconds to 8.40, in the 55 hurdles, and Solvay took third in the 4×200 in 1:39.32. Matt Battaglia was fifth in the 1,000, while Salvagno added a fourth in the triple jump.
As for Marcellus, Brian O’Connell prevailed in the high jump, clearing 5 feet 8 inches with fewer misses than Hannibal’s Jordan Skipworth. Justin Garn was second in the 600 (1:27.43), where Solvay’s Eric Goodrich was fourth. John Bell ran the 1,000 in 2:41 flat, finishing third.
J-E’s quartet of Bill DiRenzo, Dylan Whittico, Jack Gugel and Steve Slonosky rose to second in the 4×800 in 9:12.57. Also, Slonosky was fourth in the 3,200, with Gugel sixth in the 1,000 and Whittico sixth in the 600.
