Capping off a winter full of first-place finishes, the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team pulled away from Skaneateles and the rest of the field to win the Section III Class B championship Saturday at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena.
All told, Cazenovia had 165 points, while Skaneateles claimed the runner-up spot with 114 points. Homer, with 53 points, was far back in third place.
Paige Biviano again led the Lakers’ charge. Biviano won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.83 seconds, where Ashley Kent (9.88 seconds) was third, and in the high jump Biviano was the only athlete to clear 5 feet, with Emily Willard (4 feet 8 inches) fourth.
In the long jump, Biviano went 15 feet 11 1/2 inches for third place, where Liz Pittman (15 feet 4 1/4 inches) finished fourth after she also got fourth in the triple jump (30 feet 8 1/2 inches), ahead of Hannah Light-Olson in fifth and Maria vanNieuwland in sixth.
Moving to the sprints, Ashley Winn led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 55-meter dash, where Winn posted a time of 7.46 seconds ahead of Jillian Vogl (7.79 seconds) and Pittman (7.94 seconds). In the 300-meter dash, Winn earned another title in 41.97 seconds as Vogl (42.43 seconds) was third.
Together, Winn, Vogl, Kent and Jessie Matt earned another title in the 4×200 relay in 1:50.34, while in the 4×800 relay Caroline Marshall, Megan Stanford, Margaret Wolsey and Jeannette Cudney rolled to an easy victory in 10:15.64, more than 15 seconds ahead of the field.
On her own, Marshall, with a time of 4:55.76, beat Cudney (5:04.66) for a 1-2 sweep in the 1,500-meter run. Cudney worked her way to second in the 3,000-meter run in 11:03.34, with Rae Tobey third in 11:12.30.
Also, Marshall was second in the 1,000-meter run in 3:06.72 as Margaret Wolsey (3:15.17) was fourth. Stanford and Wolsey were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 600-meter run. The Lakers were fifth in the 4×400 relay in 4:36.99 as Molly Woodworth took fourth (30 feet) in the shot put.
In the boys sectional Class B meet, Cazenovia made its way to fourth place, earning 55 points. Christian Brothers Academy took the top spot with 87 points.
Doyle Judge, Matt Donovan, Dylan Muller and Anthony Randino earned a victory in the 4×400 relay in a time of 3:41.78, nearly seven seconds better than runner-up Skaneateles. In the 4×200, that same quartet of Lakers won again, in 1:38.01, topping CBA (1:39.12) and the rest of the field.
Dylan Muller gave Cazenovia another title in the pole vault, clearing 12 feet as no other competitor even reached the 11-foot mark. Cameron Braathen earned second in the shot put with a toss of 41 feet 6 3/4 inches. Ryker Smith was fourth (5 feet 2 inches) and Judge fifth in the pole vault.
Billy Bigsby earned third place in the 3,200-meter run in 10:19.09 and helped Teddy Tormey, Harry Penate and Sean Satchwell take fifth in the 4×800 in 9:42.70. Randino also was sixth in the 55 hurdles.
Chittenango’s boys indoor track team earned 29 points in last Friday’s sectional Class A meet. That included a victory in the 4×800, where Jon Roberts, Lucas Rogers, Ken Galbraith and Jason Given had a top time of 9:31.67. Rogers, by himself, was third in the 1,000, while Given took third in the 300.
The Lakers’ top athletes return to SRC Arena on Wednesday for the state qualifying meet, which sets up who advances to the March 4 state championships at Cornell University.
