Kaela Fiutak, by prevailing again in the pole vault, led another strong effort from the Skaneateles girls indoor track and field team during Tuesday night’s Section III Select Meet at SRC Arena.
Essentially, the event served as a bridge for the Lakers between its second-place finish in the Jan. 30 OHSL Liberty/Patriot meet and this Saturday’s Section III championships.
Once again, Fiutak found herself dueling with Jamesville-DeWitt’s Danielle Doss in the pole vault. Both cleared 8 feet 6 inches, but Fiutak had fewer misses than Doss, and finished on top.
Elsewhere, Madeline Adams worked her way to second place in the 1,500-meter run, going under five minutes (4:58.06, to be exact) and topping everyone except Fayetteville-Manlius freshman Annika Avery, who won in 4:51.35.
Just the same, in the 300-meter dash Emma Ford edged out Baldwinsville’s Gina Carnovale, 42.95 seconds to 42.96, for the runner-up spot behind Cazenovia’s Jillian Vogl, who needed 42.66 seconds to prevail. Erin Tonzi also ran well, claiming third place in the 600-meter run in 1:44.74.
Tonzi, Jane Gaffney, Taylor Woodruff and Anna Barnett work their way to fourth place in the 4×400 relay in 4:18.89. Ford, Woodruff, Molly McCarthy and Shelby McNeilly were sixth in the 4×200 (1:54.76), while Julia Poorman, Kaitlyn Neal, Jenn DeRosa and Virginia Hamlin were ninth in the 4×800 (10:43.19).
Alana Navaroli earned sixth in the shot put with a toss of 28 feet 8 ¾ inches. Casey Van Slyke took ninth in the 1,000-meter run in 3:20.45. Morel Malcolm was 11th (11:35.29) in the 3,000-meter run, with Corrine LaFrance 13th in the 55-meter dash.
On the boys end, Malik Merritt ran to sixth in the 55-meter dash in 6.89 seconds, while Taylor Weyneth grabbed sixth (8.40 seconds) in the 55 hurdles. Khiary Gale had a fifth-place triple jump of 40 feet 10 ½ inches, adding a 12th in the high jump.
Weyneth, B.J. Kerr, J.J. Gregg and Austin Amory were eighth in the 4×400 in 3:48.53, while Merritt, Max Dwyer, Nate Molnar and Nick Simmons got to eighth (1:41.45) in the 4×200. Dan Sakal claimed 11th (1:33.24) in the 600.
