Katie Osborne set the pace for the Cicero-North Syracuse girls indoor track and field team as it beat Liverpool in Monday’s CNY Counties League National division championship meet at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena.
With 157 points, the Northstars fended off the Warriors, who saw Ore Akinpelu win a pair of races to account for a good portion of the 122 points for the runners-up.
Osborne would clear 5 feet 3 inches in the high jump, winning that event as Javielle Fanizzi (4 feet 8 inches) took third. In the long jump, Osborne won again, going 16 feet 8 ¼ inches to leave, among others, Jade Jenkins (14 feet 11 ¼ inches) in fourth.
Mariah Thomson threw the shot put 34 feet 3 ¼ inches to win that contest. Jessica Wheeler, fourth in the shot put, won the pole vault by clearing 9 feet, with Shannon McCarthy fourth. Fanizzi added a second (32 feet 9 ¼ inches) in the triple jump, with Brittany Murphy (32 feet 3 ¼ inches) in third place.
On the oval, Maria LaMontagne blazed to a winning time of 5:00.70 in the 1,500-meter run, with Taylor Parry second in 5:01.76. Nicole Watterud won the 3,000-meter run in 10:57.42, ahead of Liverpool’s Emily Butler (11:30.18) in second as Morgan Mahoney finished fifth.
Marissa Colburn, Emily Dolan, Shannon Bausinger and Katie Laris combined as the Northstars won the 4×800 relay in 10:33.67. Colburn added a sixth in the 600-meter run.
Hannah Szumlosz added a title in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.57 seconds, with Jade Jenkins (9.81 seconds) in third place.
Akinpelu had a big night for Liverpool. On her own, she won the 300-meter dash in 43.63 seconds, as teammate Catherine Rowell was third in 45.08 seconds and C-NS’s Kristen Schug was fifth. Also, Akinpelu took the 600 in 1:42.38, with teammate Stine Albers fourth.
In the 4×200 relay, Akinpelu joined Connie Torres, Jazmine Herbert and Yasmeen Griffin as Liverpool won that race in 1:51.91, leaving C-NS (1:59.45) back in third place. Herbert, on her own, earned second in the 55-meter dash in 7.74 seconds, while Nicole Barrett was fifth.
Kyla Bills earned Liverpool’s other victory, running 1,000 meters in 3:15.15 to beat Laris (3:17.41) and Madison Kolakowski (3:21.56) from the Northstars. Bills also got to fourth (5:23.55) in the 1,500, as Emily Butler was sixth.
Tammy Brodie had a busy night, taking second in the 55 hurdles in 9.67 seconds, and also was third in the long jump (15 feet 11 ¼ inches) and fourth (4 feet 4 inches) in the high jump.
Barrett cleared 8 feet and took second in the pole vault. Nelliah Watkins went to third (27 feet 9 ¾ inches) in the shot put. Rowell added a fourth (31 feet 7 ¾ inches) in the triple jump, also helping Torres, Jessica Attaway and Leah Dixon finish second in the 4×400 relay in 4:23.88, where C-NS (4:26.42) was third.
