What had seemed, in mid-December, as a season where the Baldwinsville boys basketball team could step forward has, instead, led to more frustration.
An example of this was last Monday night’s game at West Genesee. Looking for back-to-back wins after knocking off Liverpool on Jan. 19, the Bees instead saw its offense go ice-cold for much of a 61-48 loss to the Wildcats.
In search of its own late-season momentum, WG got it by shutting B’ville down. Held to nine points in the first quarter, the Bees saw its drought get worse in the middle stages and the deficit creep to 41-20 by the end of the third quarter.
Willie Hython tried to bring the Bees back in the late going, getting most of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, but the hole was too big. Kevin Drain and Zach Leo each had eight points, while Brett Charbonneau added seven points. WG’s Trevor Smith led his side with 17 points.
B’ville would offer a serious challenge in Friday’s game at Oswego, but the Buccaneers held off the Bees 62-59.
Ignoring Oswego’s 10-3 record, B’ville, trailing 34-25 at halftime, ate into the Bucs’ margin throughout a tense second half. Drain and Hython led the way, each of them producing 21 points as Charbonneau contributed seven points.
Still, Oswego held on as Josh Gillard, with 14 points, led four Bucs in double figures. Ryan Patrick had 12 points, while Dylan Lavner and Mike Thompson each finished with 11 points.
Having fallen to 4-10, B’ville would host Cicero-North Syracuse on Tuesday before a Friday-night trip to Central Square.
