With its long win streak on the line, the West Genesee boys swim team did exactly enough work at exactly the right times to stay undefeated.
The Wildcats’ 48-45 conquest of Baldwinsville Thursday night at the Baker High School pool was far from a smooth affair, as throughout the meet the Bees threatened to end WG’s string of 33 consecutive victories.
After B’ville won the opening 200 medley relay, Jake Mullett stepped up in the 200 freestyle, prevailing in 1:55.94, and then the Zapisek brothers took over.
Collin Zapisek rolled to a 200 individual medley title in 2:10.97. Right after, Tyler Zapisek went head-to-head with Bees star Dan Burke in the 50 freestyle, and the two nearly hit the line together – but Zapisek, in 23.09 seconds, earned a crucial victory.
It was much the same in the 100 freestyle, where Collin Zapisek had to fend off Burke and prevail in 50.64 seconds, one of his best times of the season.
Meanwhile, Matt O’Donnell prevailed twice, following up a title in the 100 butterfly in 56.90 seconds by going to the 100 backstroke and winning there in 59.21 seconds. Mullett’s first-place clocking of 1:04.90 in the 100 breaststroke all but clinched the team win.
WG only got to claim one of the three relay races – the 200 freestyle, where O’Donnell, along with Ken Brill, Ian Bushnell and Josh Devendorf blazed to victory in 1:37.92.
