Even a holiday break was no time for the Skaneateles girls indoor track and field team to let up on its work – and its steady improvement.
During Wednesday’s Oscar Jensen Holiday Relays at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena, the Lakers picked up 50 points, good for fourth place and just five behind runner-up Jamesville-DeWitt. Fayetteville-Manlius won the event with 70 points as J-D (55 points) and Cicero-North Syracuse (52 points) were both just ahead of Skaneateles.
Emma Ford led the Lakers to the top spot in the 300-meter dash. Ford claimed the individual title in 59.73 seconds and, with Taylor Woodruff in third (1:02.10), Skaneateles won big in 2:01.83, more than four seconds ahead of F-M (2:06.29).
Kaela Fiutak earned an individual title in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet 6 inches with fewer misses than J-D’s Danielle Doss, which also meant a third-place team score. In the long jump, Fiutak and Woodruff earned second place with total leaps of 28 feet 8 3/4 inches, Homer (29 feet 5 3/4 inches) snaring the top spot.
Erin Tonzi had a fourth-place triple jump of 30 feet 6 inches, combining with Natalie Roche for another second-place finish as they went 58 feet 5 1/4 inches and West Genesee (60 feet 1 1/2 inches) prevailed.
Alana Navaroli, fourth among individuals in the shot put (27 feet 3/4 inch), teamed with Rachel Baker for second in the team event, the throws adding up to 51 feet 1/4 inches. only Central Square (59 feet 3 1/2 inches) fared better.
Tonzi teamed with Julia Poorman for fourth place in the 600-meter run in 3:41.80. Madeline Adams rose to third place in the 1,000-meter run in 3:11.10 as she and Jennifer DeRosa took fourth (6:45.16) among teams. Shelby McNeilly and Anna Barnett were sixth in the 300-meter dash, with Katilyn Neal and Courtney Pitman seventh in the 1,500-meter run, just out of the points.
The Skaneateles boys team had three points in its portion of the Jensen meet. Patrick Biver and Connor Hurley rose to fifth in the triple jump (combined leaps of 66 feet 10 1/4 inches), while Malik Merritt and Nick Simmons were sixth in the 55-meter dash in a combined 14.16 seconds. Taylor Weyneth took sixth in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.33 seconds.
Both of the Laker teams will return to SRC Arena on Jan. 6 to resume its season at the George Constantino Memorial meet.
