Cazenovia’s wrestling team took a large step toward the front of the OHSL Liberty division standings when it went to Skaneateles Wednesday night and dominated the annual battle of Laker teams, winning by a score of 62-18.
Every single match from 120 pounds upward – 12 in all – went in Cazenovia’s favor, including forfeits to Teddy Kugler at 138 pounds and Mike Nourse at 145 pounds.
Three times, the pins were quick, none faster than Dan Cossitt (160 pounds) taking just 14 seconds to pin Russ Burkhardt, right before Jake Wilson’s 19-second pin of Matt Sheppard at 170 pounds. Nick Petroff (120 pounds) waited a big longer – 21 seconds – before pinning Brad Ditch.
It didn’t stop there, either, as Miguel Rodriguez (152 pounds) pinned Francis Lombardi in 1:04 and Hayden Polhamus, at 195 pounds, finished off Jacob Kipp in 1:50. Dan Phillips waited until the second period before pinning 182-pound opponent Jake Brillo.
In the closest match at 126 pounds, Dylan Evans held off Tyler Saunders 7-5. At 285 pounds, Brad Lucas outlasted Garrett Navaroli 5-1, while John Nannery (220 pounds) took out Cooper Pitman 11-5. Also, Awng Hung earned a 21-5 technical fall over Andrew Newton at 132 pounds.
Chittenango also wrestled on Wednesday night, but did not find similar success against Cortland as it took a 49-34 loss to the Purple Tigers.
Since they started at 145 pounds, Cortland got a chance to put it away quickly by winning eight of the first nine matches. Only John Regan, at 160, offered a counterpoint for the Bears, pinning John Leonard in 1:18, while Brad Phelps (145) lost a 9-5 decision to Ryan Webber.
Cody Carbery got moved to 113 pounds, but still routed Grant Tinker 15-5, followed by Will Young (120) pinning Ian George in 1:44. To close out the meet, Dan Brazeau (132 pounds) pinned Alec Edwards in 1:18 and Wes Blanding, at 138, got a 25-second pin over Jake Tinker.
